Book Review: Somebody to Love by Kristan Higgins

Somebody to Love
By Kristan Higgins

Synopsis:
After her father loses the family fortune in an insider-trading scheme, single mom Parker Welles is faced with some hard decisions. First order of business: go to Gideon's Cove, Maine, to sell the only thing she now owns -- a decrepit house in need of some serious flipping. When her father's wingman, James Cahill, asks to go with her, she's not thrilled -- …even if he is fairly gorgeous and knows his way around a toolbox.

Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist's assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Maybe James isn't the glib lawyer she always thought he was. And maybe the house isn't the only thing that needs a little TLC.

Viviana's Review:

Funny, witty, and sweet!! I was either laughing or giggling from the very beginning! Our heroine, Parker, is an author and let say that like many authors, she ‘hears’ and ‘sees’ them. The interaction between them is a hoot!  Also to hear what Parker actually thinks about her characters, just makes you wonder if there are other authors out there who have a similar distaste to their creations. Viviana's Review:
The second installment from the Sin Hunter series by Caridad Pineiro, “The Claimed” is sizzling and action packed! The story continues where we left off in “The Lost” and we get to know more of the Shadow and Light Hunters. I really enjoyed how the author didn’t retell the first book within the second, as it occurs in some series. However, enough information is shared that in the event that the reader hadn’t read the first installment, they wouldn’t be lost. This can be read as a standalone book, however, why would you want to! The series is fantastic and a breath of fresh air within the PNR genre.

Viviana's Review:

As it’s the first book in the series, the ‘world setup’ had to occur with plenty of information to try to soak up. However, you’re not bombarded with all the information at once as the author has strategically calculated the release of information throughout the book and has made it part of the story as both the Hero and Heroine learn who they truly are and how they fit into this new world.

Book Review: Enraptured by Elisabeth Naughton

Enraptured
(Eternal Guardian Series #4)
By Elisabeth Naughton

Synopsis:

Orpheus--To most he's an enigma, a devil-may-care rogue who does whatever he pleases whenever he wants. Now this loose cannon is part of the Eternal Guardians--elite warriors assigned to protect the human realm--whether he likes it or not.

Orpheus has just one goal: to rescue his brother from the Underworld. He's not expecting a woman to get in the way. Especially not a Siren as gorgeous as Skyla. He has no idea she's an assassin sent by Zeus to seduce, entrap, and ultimately destroy him.

Yet Skyla herself might have the most to lose. There's a reason Orpheus feels so familiar to her, a reason her body seems to crave him. Perhaps he's not the man everyone thinks... The truth could reveal a deadly secret as old as the Eternal Guardians themselves.

Viviana's Review:

LOVED IT!! I have been eagerly waiting to read Orpheus’s story! We’ve gotten to know him throughout the series but we KNEW there was more to him than what he led on. Deemed the “bad boy” throughout the series, Orpheus has tried to live up to that perception, with some success. However, the Queen already knows his secret and not the one that Orpheus tries to hide the most, but the one that everyone believes to be true, that he is evil. She knows better! He’s helped her out too many times and knows they have a friendship, even if he denies it. Now, another woman, Skyla, a Siren sent to kill him, sees he isn’t just the smart ass, sarcastic, selfish being the Argonauts believes him to be. He struggles with his inner demons and the actual demon that is part of him.  For Skyla, there is also something oddly familiar about him. As they fight not only with each other, but to save Gryphon from the Underworld, they must both learn that there is more than meets the eye. Strings are being pulled in this ever growing game of dominance over the human realm and they must learn from the past and see what the future may hold for them.

Book Review: Secret of the Wolf by Cynthia Garner

Secret of the Wolf
(Warrior of the Rift #2)
By Cynthia Garner

Synopsis:

Once a generation, the rift between the paranormal world and the human world opens, allowing supernatural entities to cross. Vampire, demon, or shapeshifter, they can save the world-or send it spiraling into chaos.

As a werewolf liaison to the Council of Preternaturals, Tori Joseph is used to straddling the world between humans and immortals. She plays by the rules and always delivers justice, no matter the cost. But after a string of increasingly brutal attacks results in humans turning into werewolves, Tori doesn't reveal her horrifying suspicion: Someone very close to her might be responsible.

Investigating the paranormal violence, no-nonsense detective Dante MacMillan believes Tori is hiding something. His search for the truth draws him into greater danger as he gets closer to the dark realm of the immortals-and to the sexy werewolf who stirs his primal lust. Now with evil closing in around them, Dante must convince Tori to trust him . . . before her deadly secret destroys them both.

Viviana's Review:

Let me begin by saying this is the second book in the series (the first is “Kiss of the Vampire”) and I did not read the first book.  I do not believe this works as a “stand alone” book. However, the author does a great job in providing the reader with a recap of the story at the beginning and even throughout the book to further provide details, so I never felt “lost” about the main story plot. Talk about a unique, new twist to the origins of vampires, werewolves and other paranormal creatures! Beings from a different world, cast out, sent to Earth where in order to survive they must possess a human’s body. Some of the traditional aspects of these paranormal creatures still remain: both Vamps and Wares can “transform” humans into their species as legends already state (bites).

Viviana's Review:

A friend of mine who is just as much of a “Book-a-holic” as I am, if not more (gasp, can that even be?) posted a comment on the author’s fanpage which caught my attention. It included the following “He does GROWWWWWL when he…. you know”. If that doesn’t get your attention, than I don’t know what will. So a few posts back and forth, I got the name of the book and began to look up the author, Selena Blake. It turns out that “Ready & Willing” is a free book for members of her site! Originally, she was posting each chapter on her blog, but now you can purchase the entire book online!

Book Review: Improper Relations by Juliana Ross

Improper Relations
By Juliana Ross

Synopsis:

When Hannah's caught watching her late husband's cousin debauch the maid in the library, she's mortified--but also intrigued. An unpaid companion to his aunt, she's used to being ignored.

The black sheep of the family, Leo has nothing but his good looks and noble birth to recommend him. Hannah ought to be appalled at what she's witnessed, but there's something about Leo that draws her to him.

When Leo claims he can prove that women can feel desire as passionately as men, Hannah is incredulous. Her own experiences have been uninspiring. Yet she can't bring herself to refuse his audacious proposal when he offers to tutor her in the art of lovemaking. As the tantalizing, wicked lessons continue, she begins to fear she's losing not just her inhibitions, but her heart as well. The poorest of relations, she has nothing to offer Leo but herself. Will it be enough when their erotic education ends?

Viviana's Review:

Okay, so the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” doesn’t apply here! In this case, Hot Cover = Hot Book! A historical erotica novella that doesn’t leave you wanting for anything! The characters grow/develop as the story progresses. The author does a fantastic job of taking you back in time but doesn’t saturate the story with language or behavior that makes you lose sight of what is important, the characters and the story itself.

Viviana's Review:

This was J.R. Ward’s first published book which has been re-released with a new cover.  Leaping Hearts is a traditional contemporary romance with a cowboy, horses and a heroine in need of help in order to win a competition. Who doesn’t love a hunky cowboy? And the new cover, well, yummy!

Book Review: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

First Grave on the Right
By Darynda Jones

Synopsis:

A smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

Viviana's Review:

How did I go so long without reading this book (and series as a whole)? Shame on me!! Absolutely loved it! Where to start…..

This is a quick read that is easy to follow with a few subplots, but again, easy to follow. The characters are, well great! They would so be the people I would want in my life and have them as friends! They each are quirky, smart, sarcastic, and witty in their own way! The dynamic between each of the individual relationships and the larger group one is written perfectly!

Book Review: Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

Deadlocked
(A Sookie Stackhouse Novel)
by Charlaine Harris

Synopsis

Its vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart…

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s set out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

Viviana's Review

Though I was looking forward to this book, I didn’t put too high of an expectation behind it. Why? Well, the most recent books haven’t been as remarkable as some of the earlier ones. With this in mind, I began the journey to see what the inhabitants of Bon Temps, Louisiana have been up to since last we “hung out”.

Viviana's Review

Allow me to begin by saying that Laura Wright is one of my favorite authors! I LOVE the “Mark of the Vampire” series and have been eagerly awaiting Gray’s story from the very beginning! Though “Eternal Beast”, the fourth book in the series, can be read as a standalone book, I would definitely suggest you read the entire series from start to finish! It truly is a fantastic series! This includes the e-novella “Eternal Blood”, which I recommend you read before “Eternal Beast”. Again, just a suggestion as it will provide you with some background information.

Viviana's Review

Literally, it’s a series of emails. It looks like this:

From: Character’s name here – date here – time here
To: Character’s name here
Subject: insert topic here

And of course the body of the email would be here. This is the first time I’ve seen such a format for a book. Interesting! The emails are not extremely long and get straight to the point in most cases (there are a few where you just want to know about the date or something and you first have to read through the “How was your day?” reply, but those are few). They are easy to follow the conversation and what is being discussed. Actually, there was one or two times that I wanted to go back to reread a section to get the gist of something better and it was easy to remember where the conversation was.
