Audiobook Lovin' 2020 Presents: Lance Greenfield Guest Post & Giveaway

Please welcome back, narrator Lance Greenfield to
Audiobook Lovin'!!

Hi Lance!! So excited to have you as a guest again for this year’s Audiobook Lovin!

Thank you Viviana, for asking me back! I'm sharing my Top 5 Reasons Why I Love Being an Audiobook Narrator!

1. Working from home.

For the last couple years I've been doing this, I'd always taken it for granted that Brick Shop Audio, my "home base", would always be there. NOBODY could've predicted this pandemic, so when it hit, I felt, for want of a better term, screwed.  But Brick Shop stepped up, and offered me rented equipment. That was a month ago, and I’ve since recorded seven books! I feel incredibly lucky to still get to work in spite of this.

2. The community

As I had mentioned, Brick Shop was nice enough to ship me equipment in order to record from home. Not only that, but they patiently walked me through understanding Pro-Tools, and how to upload files. I’d always had this stuff done for me at the studio, but now, I feel confident and independent with the technical side! This community really takes care of its own. Not a lot of people can say that.

3. Building relationships with authors

I love authors!  It's very heartening every time someone trusts you with their "brainchild", and when you absolutely NAIL it? Their excitement and gratitude is beautiful.  I've had the privilege of getting to work regularly with Sawyer Bennett, Lauren Landish and Chelle Bliss, and it's almost like having a penpal in some way!

4. Interacting with fans

I've finally made a fan page on Facebook, and I've been overjoyed to get to interact with my fans.  I've had people message me saying that one of the books I'd narrated is helping them get through quarantine, and that just means the world to me. The listeners are so passionate and their enthusiasm is palpable!

5. The diversity of genres

Although I’ve cut my teeth in romance, I‘ve had the pleasure to also get to work on some sci-fi (Forger of Worlds series by Simon Archer), and a supernatural thriller (Follow the Crow by B.B. Griffith)! I’m thrilled by the prospect of getting a foothold in both these new genres in addition to romance and broadening my audience even further! With all this new work, Mr. Greenfield will be waiting tables no more!

Thank you Lance for sharing your some of the reasons you love being an audiobook narrator!

Last year, Lance did a written interview which I think you guys may want to check out!

Blurb:
From the unparalleled imagination of New York Times best-selling author Kristen Ashley comes an enchanting new audio-first fantasy romance series that will sweep you away!

Once upon a time, in a parallel universe, there existed the continent of Triton. The land was filled with beauty, but it was also splintered by war. Out of the chaos grew a conspiracy to reawaken the Beast, a fearsome creature who wrought only tragedy and devastation. The only way to stop him was to fulfill an ancient prophecy: Triton’s four strongest warriors must wed its four most powerful witches, binding all nations together and finally bringing peace to the land.

This is the story of their unions: the quiet maiden Silence and the savage king Mars. The cold warrior Cassius and the fiery witch Elena. The steadfast soldier True and the banished beauty Farah. And the pirate king Aramus and the mysterious queen Ha-Lah. Their unions will not be easy, but each couple must succeed, for the fate of their world is at stake....

Viviana's Review:

I really liked it, enjoyed the characters and can't wait to start the second book. With that said, the previous statement didn't occur until I was about half way through the book. Here's why...

As with any new series, especially one as epic as this one is (e.g. lots of characters, sub-plots, different POV, etc.). the first part of the book/story is dedicated to world building! I am totally okay with that! Kristen is known for giving the audience an in depth look into the world she has created. There is a LOT of details and descriptions meant to immerse you into the story and that world. We are introduced to the vast cast of characters and where they fit into the game that is the story.

So why did I only begin to truly enjoy the story about half way through the book you ask?

Well, I did mention the vast number of characters and did you see the number of narrators included in this book? Each main character is voiced by a different narrator within that character's POV chapters. This isn't done in a duet style but rather similar to dual where the narrator performs all of the characters within the character's POV. This made it difficult to discern who was who especially since we don't know who everyone is yet. Some narrators have a very distinct voice/tone that I was totally able to say "Oh that's Lance" or "Hi Stella" but the other narrators are all new to me. I believe that it would have totally helped if Audible had included the list of the cast and who they were voicing. THAT would have helped immensely and would have ensured that the listeners were provided with a guide to help them navigate this brand new world. As I knew this was a common complaint/issue (included in reviews and SM posts) I reached out to Kristen and her assistant and they provided me with the list, which is included below.

Additionally, as we're being introduced to the characters, we, the listeners, are 'popped' into a scene and then transported into another in the next chapter. New introductions. Then another one, and so on and we're trying to follow along with the different narrators and trying to put the pieces together to figure out where they all meet up/relate to one another on the board. With this said, once I learned the narrators and began to pick up on the different accents (more on this later) it became much easier to follow along.

After I finished listening, I searched to see if there was any information out there that would help me keep track of people & things. Turns out that Kristen has written a glossary for this series! Woohooo! Once I reviewed it, I got a better understanding of some of the world she has created. Click here to be taken to the glossary on Kristen's website! This list also include the characters and where they fall within the world (e.g. which Lieutenants are who's). NOTE: keep in mind this glossary is for the ENTIRE series, so there will be some terms you will learn/come across as you continue with the series.

The story begins to pick up the pace once we get to the mid-point which is when I don't want to put the book down. I knew that The Rising Series is four books, serialized, so I waited to listen to book 1 until book 2 was releases. The rest of the books released close to one another so that didn't cause any concerns. I truly don't understand why some listeners were upset that:

  1.  There wasn't a true ending. From day 1 that Kristen announced this series, she said it was a spin off of The Fantasyland Series which follows a similar if not the same recipe! She also shared that the story would be told throughout the four books. So.... this is basically one LARGE/LONG that is divided into four books, hence 'serialized'.
  2. Lack of romance/no HEA in the end. See #1. This book is the beginning of story... we're being introduced to the world, the characters, and what the 'cause' is and of course the characters themselves are learning what's going on as the listener does. There is chemistry for some. Connections for others... so again, its the beginning. I know I would NOT have been pleased if it was an "insta" love for any of the couples. It wouldn't fit with their personalities.
  3. The opening scene... many have said this book should have come with a trigger warning because of the opening scene (not including spoilers but reviews have mentioned why). Again, if you've read Kristen's books before or just her Fantastyland series (aka the second book specifically) such a scene shouldn't be a surprise. NOT because she has them all the time (human sacrifice wouldn't fit well in a contemporary romance, ya know.) but because she doesn't gloss over the ugly. She doesn't hide behind the hurt.
I also want to address that this is a Kristen Ashley book... the heroines are strong and smart. The heroes are complete alphas. YES there is sex! YES there is 'colorful' language! Yes things are going to be described at length to give you details (you may skip through some of that when you're reading, but its not easily done when its in audio, just saying). Lastly, YES there is a reason why things are on the page vs. fade to black or skimmed across. Trust Kristen as the author. If you have not read her books (or any other author) before, do a little bit of research to see if this will be your "cuppa tea". Check out the reviews before getting it. Just because you didn't like some aspect of the story (e.g. m/m scenes, language, too much sex, not enough sex, etc.) doesn't make it a bad book/story. Its just not one you enjoyed.

Something I think is also an important factor... If you're not a fan of audiobooks or you have never listened to an audiobook before, I do NOT recommend you listen to or have your first be this series. The print version is schedule to release this summer so while I'm sure you hate waiting, it will be better for you if you do.

The Narrators Review:
They all did a fantastic job! There is A LOT of information and details involved in this series with the characters. Kristen has made this world extremely diverse (woohoo LOVE THAT) from culture, to rituals to language and of course customs. Each narrator was consistent throughout the entire book all the while providing each character their own unique voice/tones.

They totally rocked their performance! So much so, that I've begun to look into other titles they have narrated. I will also be adding them to my list of recommended narrators not only to listeners but also authors when asking about casting!

All the narrators truly brought the characters to life!!

Overall, Kristen has again created a world filled with magic, sensuality, action and adventure. Her characters continue to develop as the story moves along and the listeners is brought along with them on the journey. I'm extremely curious to see how each couple handles their relationships and how they will all work together to end the Rising.

Rating: 3.5 Stars - Really LIKED IT!

Audiobook Review: The Slow Burn by Kristen Ashley

The Slow Burn
(Moonlight and Motor Oil Series, Book 2)
by Kristen Ashley

Narrated by Lance Greenfield & Stella Bloom

Blurb:

Tobias Gamble knew from a young age precisely the kind of woman he was going to make his. She was not going to be like his mother. She was going to be like the mother he claimed.

In other words, she was going to be just right.

And when Toby returns to his hometown of Matlock, Kentucky and claps eyes on Adeline Forrester, he knows she’s the one.

The problem is, his brother Johnny has a new girlfriend. And Addie is her sister. Last, Toby would do nothing to hurt Johnny’s chance at happiness.

Toby hangs around town to get to know the woman Johnny fell in love with. He also hangs around to get to know Addie.

But he’s fallen hard, and he knows the best thing for him—and Addie—is for him to leave.

Addie Forrester is thrilled her sister Eliza found a good, solid man. Johnny Gamble is the salt of the earth. The best guy in the world.

The best except for his brother, Toby.

Toby doesn’t know it, but Addie’s fallen hard too. He’s perfect, except for the fact that he’s hands off and it’s torture, being friends with Toby when she wants so much more.

Addie also has a lot on her mind. She’s got bills to pay, her young son needs food, Christmas is coming and her job at the grocery store just isn’t cutting it.

Toby is steering clear of Addie. Addie is steering clear of Toby. But everyone around them knows this is the slow burn.

Because just like Eliza and Johnny, Addie and Toby were made for each other.

Viviana's Review:

OMG I LOVED this book so much!! This is a great series filled with characters you'll love!! Kristen gives us fantastic stories and THE SLOW BURN doesn't disappoint! We met Toby & Addie in the first book and immediately wanted them to get together & get their HEA together. Well, now we have it!

This story has little angst (which is a breathe of fresh air) and lots of traditional Kristen elements (e.g. strong heroine, alpha male, steamy/hot scenes, great banter and a strong sense of family) which always makes for a great book. BONUS that this was in audio narrated by Lance Greenfield & Stella Bloom. Oh... and prepare... there will be tears!

Narrator Review:
I love Lance and Stella individually and when they are paired together its perfect! I couldn't imagine any other narrators performing THE SLOW BURN. They both are brilliant and bring an extra element of emotions that totally tug at your heart.

Overall, this was a great ending to this series and it does not disappoint!!

Rating: 4.5 Stars - I REALLY LOVED IT

Audiobook Lovin 2019 Presents: Lance Greenfield Interview

Please welcome narrator Lance Greenfield to
Audiobook Lovin'!!

Hi Lance!! So excited to have you as a guest at this year’s Audiobook Lovin!

For those that may not know you, why don’t we start by having you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became a narrator?

I started out primarily as an actor for film, TV and stage. I began my career as a narrator in 2015, when a friend of mine suggested I reach out to Brick Shop Audio in Brooklyn. I was very fortunate to get cast in two books straight out the gate; Watch Me by Cynthia Eden and Resist Me by Chelle Bliss! I’ve been at it nearly 5 years now, and I’m about to narrate the hilarious Madison’s Mess by Robyn Peterman.

Are you narrating full time now or not yet? Are there other voice over jobs you’ve done?

Audiobook Review: Loose Ends by Kristen Ashley

Loose Ends, Volume One
(Loose Ends #1)
by Kristen Ashley
Narrated by Lance Greenfield, Clara Francesca, Sarah McEwan, Susannah Jones, Savannah Peachwood, Brooke Bloomingdale, Sean Crisden, Alexander Cendese, Felicity Munroe

Blurb:

Tying up...Loose Ends

In Kristen Ashley's first anthology, listeners will find three short stories and two novellas taking them back to characters and series in the Kristen Ashley universe.

"No Clue", a short story - Visit with Joe and Vi from At Peace of The 'Burg series and learn how Joe breaks up a fight between his sons, what Ryker's up to and why, exactly, his wife Violet has no clue.

The Stars Aligned, a novella - The long-awaited love story of Hap and Luci. Introduced in Heaven and Hell, listeners learned, after a heartbreaking journey through grief, Luci was ready to take another chance at love. But Hap was adhering to "the code" between brothers, unwilling to betray his dead friend Travis by falling for Travis's widow. Further, Hap can't quite believe a beauty like Luci could fall for a normal guy like Hap. But for Luci and Hap the heart can't be denied. Especially when the stars align.

"The Favor", a short story - Deacon and Cassidy from Deacon of the Unfinished Heroes series go back to their favorite cabin at Glacier Lily, and there, Cassie asks her husband a favor. He'll give her anything she wants. Including this.

More Than Everything, a novella - Listeners left Diesel, Maddox and Molly at a crossroads at the end of The Greatest Risk of the Honey series. Maddox and Molly were all in with their commitment to their unconventional love triangle. But Diesel was letting the pressures and prejudice of family and society sink under his skin, making him hold himself distant from the man he loved. Can Maddox and Molly lead Diesel fully into their lives and give him more than everything?

"Rock Chick Renewal", a short story - Tod has been planning Rock Chick weddings for years. He's got a new one on his hands. And it's not what he expected.

Viviana's Review:

"No Clue": Okay so I haven't read/listened to the "At Peace" of The 'Burg series. However, "No Clue" was a perfect little sample that made me want more! So I ran and looked the book up and added it to my library to listen to it. It was a cute short story and for readers/fan of the series, I'm sure it gave them a nice glimpse of what the couple has being up to and for them to reconnect with them.

"The Stars Aligned": is one of the two novellas included in LOOSE ENDS. I really enjoyed it! This could totally also be read as a standalone. You got a little bit of hints of what must have happened to them within a book in the series, but the information was sprinkled here and there so you were not lost what so ever. Apparently, Hap and Luci were introduced in "Heaven and Hell" and are fan favorites! I can see why! This story had a little bit of everything and was just long enough to get everything you wanted from it! There was one character that now I'm hoping Kristen will give him his HEA!! Fingers crossed!!

"The Favor": really cute!! This was definitely an opportunity to get a glimpse at Deacon and Cassidy. Needless to say... all is going pretty good!!! I do enjoy it when we get to revisit a couple and "check in" on them so to speak.

"More Than Everything": The other novella included is about Diesel, Maddox, and Molly who were introduced in Kristen's "The Greatest Risk" of the Honey series. If you haven't read the "The Greatest Risk", no worries! Kristen did a great job in giving the readers enough information to know what's going on and this is truly a story about how Diesel needs to come to terms about certain things and accepting that he is worth it. I enjoyed it but did think that it was going on a little longer than necessary. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of sexy time (LOL) just thought that there was a bit too much internal struggle going on which became a bit repetitive so when the sexy time pops up, some felt a wee bit of a filler. I guess I wanted to see how things would end and of course the HEA. I will say that Kristen does a great job of writing the sexy time scenes. This is MM & MF & MFM and MMF and BDSM is included so while it may not be for everyone, anyone diving into the series for the first time will see how Kristen writes and will be wanting to read the HONEY SERIES!

"Rock Chick Renewal" was a really short story and cute and very sweet!!

"Fairy story"... this was a brand new story and I'm hoping an introduction to a new series Kristen is writing! It was cute and you were totally rooting for the fairy and her cause. Can't say more as it would be considered a spoiler and we wouldn't want that!!

NARRATORS REVIEW:
This was a great cast of narrators!! Will say that I wish that a male narrator was selected to do the "Rock Chick Renewal" as it was a male POV and while the narrator is awesome, I think it would have benefited from a male narrator because of the POV. I LOVED the female narrator for "The Stars Aligned" as her Italian accent was perfect! The narrators all did a great job in their performance which adds to making it an even better story.

Overall, this is a fan's dream come true!! When we as readers/listeners fall for characters, we want to see what has become of them after we get their HEA! Sometimes, a secondary character makes a bigger mark than the author originally intended! "Loose Ends" provides us with a glimpse to some of our favorites!

Rating: 4.Stars - I LOVED IT

Audio Book Review: Complicated by Kristen Ashley

Complicated
by Kristen Ashley
Narrated by Lance Greenfield & Erin Mallon

Blurb:
Exclusively written for Audible, available only in audio. From the New York Times best-selling author of the Rock Chick series comes a story of love, murder, and second chances....

When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them - a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

Viviana's Review:
I have loved all the books I've read/listened to by Kristen Ashley and this one is among them! When I first learned Kristen was doing an exclusive story for Audible I was all giddy because, well, this is KRISTEN ASHLEY! Kristen is a truly gifted story teller! The Narrators ROCKED! This story is full of heart, a strong, independent and smart heroine, a hero that is not only sexy and yummy but isn't an a$$ yet very Alpha Male as we come to expect from Kristen's males! This is definitely a MUST LISTEN!!

I mean check out this sampler.....

That intro leaves you wanting more! We want to know why he is in such a rush to get out when he is obviously affected by this woman so much so that there is a connection from the very beginning! Then you want to know how this is all going to play out! And the pages keep turning and you are engrossed by the characters, their lives and the hope that everything is going to work out. While we know romance will have the HEA, its the journey to get there that we are intrigued about.

Narrator's Review: OMG! LOVED THEM!! This is the first I listen to anything narrated by Lance and I'm so looking up all the books he's narrated! They rocked it as they both provided all the characters with their own unique tones and voices and performed the story beautifully!

Overall, WONDERFUL story that Kristen Ashley fans and new readers will LOVE!!

Rating: 5 Stars - Perfection!
