The easiest way to learn a little about me would be to look around my attic office.
Sitting at my desk in the middle of the room, I am surrounded by my passions: My stereo in front of me with CDs and records exploding from the corners of the room, my favorite LEGO models atop the furniture including the Millenium Falcon and Optimus Prime, my sim racing chair behind me where I race GT3 cars when there isn’t an F1 race to watch on TV, lanyards from concerts and conventions I have worked on throughout my life, pictures of my wife and kids (the only thing allowed on my desk when it’s clean), and books…many, many books.
My life in books has mirrored my journey across the United States (with much shorter stops around the world both for both work and recreation). Growing up in Oklahoma City and then Los Angeles, I consumed The Hardy Boys and Choose Your own Adventure books. As an adolescent and young adult in Austin, Texas, I gravitated to the classics of science fiction (Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein) and anything Michael Crichton had penned. During my early professional years as an audio-visual consultant and then as a stage lighting designer, I found intrigue in non-fiction (Richard Rhodes, Tom Wolfe) and more cerebral fiction (Neal Stephenson and, yes, some Ayn Rand). Moving to Chicago and then New York City, I continued my explorations of cyberpunk and even modern absurdism (William Gibson, Douglas Coupland). Now, in my parenting years, I find myself collecting books on creativity (Twyla Tharp, Walter Isaacson) and being exposed (through narration) to a host of Romance, Fantasy, and Thrillers.
When I step into the booth, these are the things I bring with me. The places I have lived, the countries I have visited, and the stories I have helped to tell on stage. They all get woven into the characters that I voice.
[Phil lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters. Their family enjoys reading, movies, LEGO, and listening to music with the volume turned up to eleven.]
