Guest Post: Demon Possession by Kiersten Fay

Welcome Kiersten Fay to Enchantress of Books!!

Things I try to avoid when developing a story.

Some topics and plots are easy to fall back on when writing. Why do you suppose we have so many detective shows on television right now? Because they are easy to write—carbon copies of each other, practically. Romance has its own set of pit-falls. A.k.a., anything on Lifetime. Although, I must admit, Lifetime is stepping it up a notch, lately.

Abusive Relationships
One thing I try to avoid, or at least not center a story around, is the typical battered woman. This is a tricky one to avoid, or should I say maneuver, because in romance, there will always be someone out to get the heroine. In Demon Possession, Analia is a slave who has been, of course, mistreated. However, although I might allude to her mistreatments, I don’t focus on it as a main plot point. Rather, I use her unpleasant history to display Analia’s strength and resilience.

TSTL — Too Stupid To Live
This, like many romance junkies, is a pet peeve of mine that eclipses all the others: females who run up the stairs to get away from a murderer instead of heading out the back door, then they fall halfway up and get their ankles snagged. Or the female who decides she knows what’s best in a situation she’s never encountered and winds up getting herself, and everyone else, captured by the enemy. Basically any irrational, unrealistic, and generally stupid behavior, usually displayed by the heroine, which leaves most of us thinking, “Now, why does he like her again?” Am I right?

I may not always succeed, but I’ll always try not to resort to idiocy to keep a story moving.

Purple Prose
Otherwise known as extravagant and flowery writing; a.k.a., those cheesy scenes that make you roll your eyes rather than swoon. Writers love words! Putting the perfect words together in order to paint a visual picture and tweak a reader’s emotions is what drives us. However, in trying to do so, we risk falling into the trap of being overly, an unnecessarily descriptive, thus taking a reader out of the story.

As you can imagine, avoid all these easy pit falls makes writing a book both challenging and fun, at other times, hair-grippingly vexatious, and yet, so incredibly rewarding when that last period is finally typed. Happy reading.

Blurb:
After being enslaved on the spaceship Extarga for most of her life Analia has no memory of her life before, and has lost all knowledge of her people. Her mysterious gift and pointed ears are the only indication that she is different.

Analia is alone, and for all she knows, she's the last of her kind. By chance Analia escapes her captors, and hides herself on the merchant ship Marada, planning to get off at the very next stop.

Unfortunately for her, there is no next stop. The crew is planning a delivery that could take months, and according to a stipulation in the newly signed contract, no one is allowed on or off the ship until the package is delivered.

When Analia is found by the  captain of the Marada, she must adapt to her new role on the ship, and try to control her newly awakened desire for the brutal and devastatingly erotic demon.
