Audiobook Reviews Matter More Than You Think
Every review helps authors gain visibility, assists narrators in growing their careers, and gives fellow listeners valuable insight into whether an audiobook might be their next favorite listen. Yet many reviewers struggle with what to write, what information to include, and how to properly disclose when they've received an ARC or ALC.
In this article, we'll discuss how to write reviews that are helpful and informative, why it's important to recognize the narrators behind the microphone, and what every reviewer should know about FTC disclosure requirements when sharing recommendations and reviews online.

Start With Your Listening Experience
Consider:
- Did the story keep your attention?
- Were the characters memorable?
- Did the pacing work for you?
- Would you recommend it to another listener?
Narration is a major part of the audiobook experience and deserves recognition.
- Narrator names
- Performance quality
- Character voices
- Emotional delivery
- Pacing and tone
Don't Repeat the Book Blurb
The publisher has already provided the synopsis. Instead of retelling the plot, focus on your experience listening to it.
Instead of rewriting the blurb, tell potential listeners:
- What stood out to you
- Which characters you enjoyed
- How the narration enhanced the story
- Whether the audiobook kept you engaged
- What type of listener might enjoy it
Readers are looking for your opinion—not the marketing copy.
Keep It Honest
Not every audiobook/story will be a five-star listen, and that's okay.
Constructive, respectful feedback helps fellow listeners make informed decisions and provides valuable insight to authors, narrators, and publishers.
A review doesn't need to be lengthy. Even a few thoughtful sentences can make a significant impact.
Understanding FTC Disclosure Requirements
If you participate in ARC (Advance Review Copy) or ALC (Advance Listening Copy) teams, it's important to understand the disclosure requirements established by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The FTC is the U.S. government agency responsible for protecting consumers and promoting fair competition. Part of that responsibility includes ensuring that endorsements, recommendations, reviews, and promotional content are transparent and truthful.
Recently, the FTC updated and clarified its guidelines regarding endorsements and social media influencers. While many people assume these rules only apply to influencers with large followings, the guidance also applies to:
- ARC Team Members
- ALC Team Members
- Book Reviewers
- Book Bloggers
- Bookstagrammers
- BookTok Creators
- Content Creators
- Anyone promoting a book or product after receiving compensation
What Counts as Compensation?
Compensation is not limited to monetary payment.
Receiving any of the following may require disclosure:
- Free audiobooks
- Free ebooks
- Physical books
- Gift cards
- Merchandise
- Discounts
- Event access
- Any product received in exchange for a review or promotional consideration
An ALC or ARC provided in exchange for an honest review is generally considered compensation because you received something of value.
What Should Be Disclosed?
If you received an audiobook through an ALC program, your review or promotional post should clearly disclose that fact.
Examples include:
- "I received a complimentary ALC and am providing my honest review."
- "I received a free audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review."
- "This audiobook was provided to me by the author/publisher for review consideration."
The disclosure should be clear, easy to find, and understandable to the average reader.
Why Disclosure Matters
Transparency builds trust.
Disclosing that you received a review copy does not make your review less valuable. In fact, it demonstrates professionalism and helps maintain credibility within the audiobook community.
Authors, narrators, publishers, and listeners all benefit when reviews are honest and transparent.
Learn More
We strongly encourage all reviewers, bloggers, and ALC/ARC team members to visit the FTC's official website and review the Endorsement Guides for detailed information regarding reviews, recommendations, endorsements, and advertising disclosures.
Understanding these requirements helps protect both reviewers and content creators while ensuring a trustworthy and ethical review community.

Reviews help authors gain visibility, narrators gain recognition, and listeners discover their next favorite audiobook.
Whether your review is one sentence or several paragraphs, your voice matters. Be honest, be respectful, credit the narrators, disclose when required, and most importantly, share your genuine listening experience.
