Hi Everyone and happy Friday!!

In honor of Audiobook Lovin 2017, I thought I’d throw together my Top 10 Audio series. When I read on the Kindle, I just grab the first thing I find on there (normally romance). When I listen to an audiobook, there’s a whole nexus of things I look for in a ‘perfect’ audio listen. It’s got to have that sweet spot of ‘narrator’ plus ‘story’ plus ‘excitement’. We’ve all had the audiobook that was so monotone that it puts you to sleep instead of listening to it (amirite?) so here are my favorite audio ‘reads’ and ones that I’ve listened to more than once!

1)   Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers series. OH EM GEE I love this series so much. I think I’ve listened to the audio of it at least a half dozen times. The narrator, Cassandra Morris, hits it out of the stinkin’ park and I loved her narration of this so much that when Audible bought the audio rights to my YA fairy tale, The Scarecrow King, I asked for someone just like Cassandra Morris. I nearly fell out of my chair when they got her! She’s an absolute dream to listen to – chatty and conversational but still manages to sound like an uncertain teenager. And if you think she sounds familiar, if you played Persona 5 recently (as I did) you’ll notice that she’s the voice of Morgana. So cool! <3

2)   Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series. Nothing can make Kresley’s books hotter than they already are…UNTIL YOU ADD ROBERT PETKOFF. **fans self** He’s a stage actor in London, I believe, and he does an incredible job of bringing these to life. And sexy accents? Scottish brogue? He does them all.

3)   Simon R. Green’s The Nightside. These are narrated by Marc Vietor and he nails it. If you want light, fun (but still with edge) urban fantasy, read these. My husband is a picky, voracious audio consumer and this is his absolute favorite series.

4)   Ilona Andrews’s Clean Sweep. A magical inn, Southern shenanigans, and the typical Andrews plot craziness in an urban fantasy adventure. Throw in the fact that they got Renee Raudman (who narrates the Kate Daniels series) and this is just awesome all over.

5)   Rae Carson’s Girl of Fire and Thorns – Another young adult! I bounce around in genres when I listen, and I loved loved loved this book so much as a paper read, that I immediately grabbed it in audio. The narrator does a fantastic job, and it’s such an immersive, heartfelt story you’re going to never want to put it down.

6)   Robert Bevan’s Critical Failures – If you love South Park and Dungeons and Dragons and thought the two should be mixed, this is your jam. The humor is completely politically incorrect, the characters are jerks,  and it is the funniest damn thing you will read/listen to in a long time. The narrator’s great, too.

7)   Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody series – This isn’t a new series. It’s a mystery series about Victorian Egyptologists and the shenanigans they get into. You want the Barbara Rosenblat version of the audio, because she does the most fantastic narration of both Peabody and her romantic interest (no spoilers!) that you’ll gobble up all nineteen books (I think the last one is narrated by someone else).

8)   Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter series – Dark and romantic romance with an impassive wall of a hero (who is a secret marshmallow for his heroine) and lots of action. I love anything with angels and this had me in the first chapter with its unique storyline. Plus, you really can’t go wrong with Nalini Singh. Justine Eyre does a fantastic job of hitting just the right notes story-wise and keeps the pace going without dragging things out (I hate sloooow narrators!).

9)   Kathryn Stockett’s The Help. You’re probably thinking ‘wuuuut’ because a lot of my reads are either YA/Romance/Fantasy. But I was in the mood for something different and a friend suggested this one to me. It’s loooong. You’ve probably seen the movie already and thought “eh”. But seriously, the book is SO GOOD. It’s less Skeeter’s story (whereas in the movie it was all about the white savior) and more about Aibileen and Minny. The narration is out of this world good, and it’s going to make you angry at the movie in all the best ways. Plus, Octavia Spencer is one of the narrators. Seriously. Get this in audio.

10) The Hitman series by Jessica Clare & Jen Frederick– omg what’s this? I’m plugging my own stuff? HUSSY! Well, yes, but mostly because of IGGY TOMA. You want a sexy Russian accent? He does such a fantastic job as Nick in Last Hit that I broke my own rule about listening to my own audio. SO GOOD. I’m clearly a sucker for an accent, and the moment I heard his narration, I was so damn excited for this book, you cannot even imagine.

  1. I couldn't agree more about Robert Petkoff. He's fabulous! And it's so good to hear about The Help. It's sitting in my library.
