Blog Tour - Author Interview & Giveaway: "Enslaved" by Elisabeth Naughton

Viviana
Welcome Elisabeth, to Enchantress of Books. I’d like to start by saying Thank You for visiting with me today!

Elisabeth
Thanks for inviting me to stop by! I’m thrilled to be here.

Viviana
“Enslaved” is the fifth book in the Eternal Guardian Series. Why don’t you tell us about your latest release?

Elisabeth
The Eternal Guardians are seven warriors descended from the seven greatest heroes in Greek Mythology. They protect their own realm (Argolea) and the human realm from threats born of the Underworld, in particular one evil goddess with a serious vendetta against the guardians. Each book centers around a different guardian, with an over-arching plot of good vs. evil tying the series together.

Book five is Gryphon’s book. He’s my lost Argonaut. His soul was sent to the Underworld to be tortured in book 3 (TEMPTED) and he was rescued in book 4 (ENRAPTURED), but he came back a changed hero. Gryphon was always the easy-going, fun guardian. Now he hears voices, he twitches, and he fights an evil foreboding that haunts his every move. His story is really about finding himself again, and the one woman who has the power to rescue him from himself.

Viviana
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another? If so, which one?

Elisabeth
Gryphon was by far the hardest character to write in this book. Everyone thinks he’s psychotic, he hears voices and is consumed by darkness. It was a real struggle to show all that and at the same time make readers like him.

Viviana
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others? Why?

Elisabeth
It probably makes me a little sick and twisted, but I LOVE writing Hades. He’s just so…bad. But he doesn’t think he’s bad. And I love that even with all the naughty stuff he does, deep down he loves Persephone more than anything.

Viviana
Your heroines are strong, independent, smart women that may have ‘issues’ or vulnerabilities but they are not whiny or meek. They stand up for themselves and what they believe in. What made you write your heroines this way when many authors go the other route?

Elisabeth
I can’t stand whiney heroines. I’ve never been the type of person who believes you are the result of what happens to you. I believe each person creates their own destiny. My heroines may have bad things thrown at them that knock them off balance, but each one determines who she is and where she goes from that point forward.

Viviana
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?

Elisabeth
There’s always part of me in every character I write, but the heroine I’m probably most like is Casey. She was easy for me to write in MARKED because I could easily see myself reacting to things in the way she did. I tend to be a little sarcastic, so anytime a character says something snarky, that’s me coming through loud and clear.

Viviana
“Enslaved” is filled with action from the very beginning. The novel is also full of emotions and personal struggles. And let’s not forget the hot, sexy scenes. What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?

Elisabeth
My favorite scene in the book comes about halfway through. Gryphon thinks he’s done something truly awful to Maelea and when he wakes in the morning with only fuzzy memories of the night before, he’s racked with guilt. I love this scene because the whole time he’s trying to apologize to Maelea for what he did, she’s looking at him like he’s nuts. And when he realizes WHY she’s looking at him that way…? Oh, thinking about what happens from there forward always makes me smile.

Viviana
Before you go, can you give us hint of what’s to come in Eternal Guardian Series?

Elisabeth
Absolutely! Right now I’m working on book 6 in the Eternal Guardians Series, tentatively titled SCORCHED. This is Titus’s book and picks up where ENSLAVED leaves off. Lots of stuff happening in this book that will set things up for Nick’s book, which will come next. Both are set to release in 2013.

Viviana
Squeee!!! Titus is a favorite of mine and I can't wait to read his story!! This was fun!! Again, thanks for visiting! We’ll have to do this again!!

Elisabeth
Thanks again for the invite!

Author Bio

I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn't have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn't exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.

Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn't actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

    1. Olga - I've picked the titles for about half of my books and my publisher's picked the rest. Usually I come up with a list of title ideas and they yay or nay them from that point on. I wasn't sure if they'd use ENSLAVED because it was another "EN starting" title and I didn't want readers to get confused, but it totally fit the book since Gryphon was enslaved in the Underworld and is still in his own personal prison even though he's free. In the end, they loved it as much as I did so they used it.

  2. I read that you were going to kill Gryphon off in Tempted, but Joan Swan stopped you...high five Joan; I'm really looking forward to reading Enslaved.

I've seen that you said something pivotal happens in book seven that sends the series in another direction. Should I be nervous?!

    1. Yes, Joan gets the credit for saving Gryphon's life. (And she never lets me forget it, either.)

And LOL about book seven. Don't you trust me????

Elisabeth, what is the most surprising thing that has happened to you since you’ve become a full-time romance author?
