Audiobook Review: Surrender by Amy Daws

Surrender
(Harris Brothers Series, Book 4 )
by Amy Daws
Narrated by , Will Watt and Piper Goodeve with special guest Charlotte Cole

Blurb:
One night of complete surrender is all it takes.

Gareth Harris is Manchester United's reclusive star defender. He has control over all aspects of his life. But a lifetime of supporting his siblings and filling in for an emotionally absent father has taken its toll.

Sloan Montgomery is a clothing stylist whose world was turned upside down when she found herself pregnant and moving to Manchester with a man who was never supposed to be her forever. Now recently divorced and struggling with shared custody of her daughter, control is a fleeting concept for this American living in England.

Both Gareth and Sloan are in need of a release. A moment in time where they can forget about their pasts and family pressures...and just...surrender. No one could predict what happens when both of their defences are down.

Surrender is part one of the Final Harris Brother Duet and concludes with Dominate. This duet is a great listen on its own, but to maximize enjoyment, check out the first three brothers books in Challenge, Endurance, and Keeper.

Viviana's Review:
I've only listened to one of the previous stories in this series so I had an idea about 'moody/mysterious Gareth" and of course with the mystery comes the "ohhhhh can't wait" moment, right? lol The good news is that you don't have to read/listen the previous books in the series to fully understand/get this one. Amy, the author, does a great job of introducing the family in a way that its not overly done nor get you lost. So feel free to dive right into this book!
I enjoyed this audiobook! There were great characters, fun moments and of course, steamy moments! LOVED the siblings support and interaction with each other. You can 'see' their bond and that they are there for each other! The secondary characters were a hoot! I loved seeing Gareth with his niece and his softer side. I also enjoyed how both the MC were open to trying something new (you'll see).

However, as much as I enjoyed SURRENDER, there were a few things that could have been done better. There was potential to make this an awesome book! I do wonder if part of the issue is that it wasn't a complete story. SURRENDER is part 1 of 2 and there is a cliff hanger.

One of the things I didn't like in the previous book was the repetitive narrative of why the MCs couldn't be together. It got to the point where you rolled your eyes and said "really? again with that?". With SURRENDER, the repetitive narrative is still there but at a lower level. So while this was an improvement, its truly not necessary for the story.

More and more books have 'texting' as part of conversations between characters. Its important to know who is saying what and seeing the names on the page to mirror what our phones would show is fine. However, when its in audio, not so much. SURRENDERED is in duet narration and when the conversation occurs between the MCs we KNOW who is the one 'texting/speaking'. So having each of the narrators say who is texting EVERY SINGLE TIME was... well, it got annoying very fast and distracted from the conversation. It also didn't allow for things to flow nicely. I've listened to other books where the characters name are mentioned solely at the first text so we know who is chatting.. wishing this was done instead.

There was something else that I wish would have been handled better... how to include this without spoilers?... Uhm.... The topic can be taboo and its very misunderstood. I didn't like that even though its what the Heroine wanted (and hero), it was approached in a manner as if its a "bad thing". This is where I wished that more research was done and made into a positive thing vs making it into an "I'm not like that!" sort of thing. Again, a bit hard to address without spoilers.

Narrator's Review: Oh I LOVED that there were three narrators for this (and the next book in the series)! Both Will and Charlotte narrated the previous book that I listened to and I was concerned for this one as I wasn't a fan of the performance (don't shoot me!) or rather the tone.. but anyways... in SURRENDER, we get a different female lead narrator and I loved that there were three narrators. Each bringing their best to the game!

Overall, I enjoyed the story even though it ends in a cliff hanger.... Garreth story is so huge (ahem) that it needed two books to tell it! lol. While there is potential for it to have been a much better book, it had a good pace and characters that you want to know more about. And of course wanting to know what happens next!!!

Rating: 3 Stars - I liked it
