Author Interview: Beautiful Scars by Shiloh Walker

Hello Shiloh and welcome to Enchantress of Books!! Delighted to have you!!

Thanks for having me…

Can you tell us a bit more about Chaili and Marc, the hero and heroine in “Beautiful Scars”?

Marc is a famous musician.  Chaili is one of his closest friends.  She’s known him since high school, when he was just hoping to make it as a musician, and she loved him then.  She still loves him, but she’s kind of given up hoping that he’ll ever notice her.

What inspired you to write “Beautiful Scars”?

A picture.  If you read the book, it will make more sense.

Some of the topics you write about may be considered taboo and/or edgy, how do you feel about that and what makes you write about them?

I just write what works for the story.  I don’t write anything just to be taboo or edgy.  I don’t mind writing something that edges or crosses a line, but doing it just to do it doesn't work for me.  It has to work for the story or it doesn't work for me.

When you were writing “Beautiful Scars” was there any part that was difficult to write?

Nope.

How much research do you do for your stories?

Depends on the story.  There was information in Chaili’s history that I had to research, factual data that I needed to know.  Beyond that?  I just wrote the story as it played out in my head.

Do you have a ‘writing cave’? What does your ‘writing space’ look like and what are your must haves while writing?

Nah.  I don’t need anything, if the mood to write is there, except my writing gloves and those are just to protect my wrists.  My hands are shot so the gloves are there to prevent pain.  I prefer to have quiet, but I can write in utter chaos, kids yelling and fighting, if I have to.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

The non-writing stuff, which, sadly, is half of the job if you’re a professional writer.

Do you ever get writer’s block? And if so, what do you do to get over it?

I don’t get writer’s block, really.  Sometimes a story gets ‘stuck’ and that just means there is a point in the story where I took a wrong turn.  Then I have to back up and figure out where I turned wrong.

There have been a few points in my life when I haven’t wanted to write.  After I miscarried, I didn’t want to write at all and I let myself take a few weeks off.  But it’s not that I had writer’s block. I just didn’t have it in me.

For your own reading, do you prefer e-books or traditional paper/hard back books?

For the most part, I prefer print.  I spend too much time staring at a screen and my eyes are too stressed as it is.

What is your favorite quote?

“Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”  Mother Teresa.  Smart woman… a lot of the problems in the world seem insurmountable.  But if we took it on, one problem at a time, I think we could do a whole hell of a lot to change the suffering we see.

What project are you working on now?

What project?  LOL.  There’s never just one.  I’m juggling four at the moment.  Two Colbana projects, a contemporary and an RS proposal.

Lighting Round:

Dark or Milk Chocolate?  Dark
Beer or Wine?  Usually wine, but I love hard cider
Dining in or Dining out? I like dining out, but I hate spending the money
Favorite Color? Blue
Favorite snack? Potato chips
Cats or Dogs? Dogs
Sweet or Sour? Sweet

Beautiful Scars

Blurb:

Some scars cut right to the heart.

Three years after her divorce, Chaili Bennett is over her ex. Her only problem now? Of the few men she’s dated since, no one “gets” her. Not like Marc Archer—a man who’s never seen her as more than a friend.

Marc Archer needs a date for a last-minute charity event, and he needs it fast. Not that women aren't throwing themselves at his world-famous face and body, but sometimes it’s less messy—as in less personal—to use his sister Shera’s escort service.

The last woman on earth Marc expects to see in his sister’s office is Chaili. There’s something different about her, but nothing pleases him more when Shera sets them up. That simple date quickly evolves into much more as they both discover the other fills a deep, secret need they've shared with anyone else.

Though Chaili insists one night is all she wants, Marc isn't walking away now. Not until he discovers what put the shadows in her eyes. And the scars on her soul.

Excerpt

She all but groaned as he launched into the one part that got to her, every damn time, right near the end.

His voice dropped, lower, rougher.

A shudder went through her and she grabbed the glass of wine, drank it down. They’d emptied the bottle and she wished she could blame the heat burning inside her on the wine, but it wasn't that. It was him. Always him—

“What is it about you and that song?”

As the music faded, she jerked her head up, saw him staring at her.

She tried to shrug. It wasn't the song, it was him. Something about the way he sang it, hell, the way he sang anything… She licked her lips and stared off into the distance, trying to figure out the right way to say something that wasn't a lie, but didn't leave her stripped bare.

A harsh groan reached her ears.

Startled, she looked at him, realized he was staring at her mouth.

Two seconds later, he was reaching for her.

Stunned, she couldn't think. As his lips covered hers, she just couldn't think.

Marc was kissing her.

Damn it.

Marc was kissing her—

Had she drank more wine than she’d thought?

“Open your mouth,” he snarled against her lips, a harsh, urgent command in his voice. “Give me your mouth.”
