Audiobook Review: How To Date Your Dragon by Molly Harper

How to Date Your Dragon
By Molly Harper
Narrated by Amanda Ronconi & Jonathan Davis

Blurb:

The first book in Molly Harper's uproariously funny, sinfully sexy new Mystic Bayou series!

Anthropologist Jillian Ramsay's career has taken a turn south.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations. Mermaids and gator shifters swim in the bayou. Spirit bottles light the front porches after twilight. Dragons light the fires under crayfish pots.

Jillian's first assignment for the League could be her last. Mystic Bayou is wary of outsiders, and she has difficulty getting locals to talk to her. And she can't get the gruff town sheriff, Bael Boone, off of her back or out of her mind. Bael is the finest male specimen she's seen in a long time, even though he might not be human. Soon their flirtation is hotter than a dragon's breath, which Bael just might turn out to be....

Viviana's Review:
OMG I was extremely excited when I learned that Molly would be writing a new book that would be an Audible Exclusive! As more and more information came out the excitement just grew!! I LOVE Molly's books and HOW TO DATE YOUR DRAGON was no different!! The world building is done beautifully and you'll love all the characters that live in the Mystic Bayou!

We go through the journey with Jillian Ramsay, the heroine, learning about the residences of Mystic Bayou from her POV and interactions. I LOVED seeing (okay hearing but you know what I mean) her reactions to seeing the 'magic' taking place in this small town.

Hmmmm Bael Boone, the hero is as the blurb says the gruff town sheriff. He is weary of Jillian and the League. So you can imagine that their first meeting didn't go smoothly. However, they have to work together and they make it work!

There is lots of tension between Bael & Jillian which of course make things better for the reader/listener. I LOVED seeing the interaction between Bael and Zed and with other characters and then Jillian's interactions with these same characters and how they all love her and immediately connect. Bael & Jillian find common ground and their relationship flourishes.

Narrators' Review:

I'm used to listening to Amanda Ronconi when it comes to Molly's books, so I was intrigued to learn that this title would be a dual narration with Jonathan Davis. How was the duel narration vs. having Amanda narrate only.... I liked it however, there were a few issues that I will address below. I really enjoyed listening to Jonathan... this is actually my first time listening to him. I liked his deep and gravelly voice and it totally works for both Bael and Zed! Amanda ROCKS as usual!! I love her performance.

I believe that this would have benefited a lot if it was a duet narration. Jonathan's voice and tone is significantly different from Amanda's. Rather their performance is significantly different, that is. It is this difference that I had issues with as a listener.
The contrast in performance was vast especially with Amanda's upbeat tones and Jonathan's more casual performance.

There were several spots during Jonathan's narration where the audio volume was 'low'... I mean it sounded like he was down in a well... no bueno! This was distracting but also off putting considering this is an Audible production.

Lets talk accents.... if the characters are said to have accents, its important for both narrators to perform the accent. When one does and the other doesn't or the accent differs in intensity it not only distracting but can be off putting. I wish these issues were caught and corrected before the release as it would have made for a much better listen!!

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and love it, but I would have LOVED it even more if it were for the issues mentioned above. With that said, I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Rating: 4 Stars - I LOVED IT

Audiobook Review: Delivered Through the Storm by Nicole Garcia

Narrated by Wen Ross & Kai Kennicott

Blurb:

Available for purchase at

Viviana's Review:

I really enjoyed the story and the characters. This is a contemporary romance that is low in 'drama' and high in the 'steaminess' as well as story tell which is a great mix! The pace was also good allowing the reader to get to know and fall for the characters!

Speaking of falling for the characters, you will LOVE Ryder Storm! Not only is he sweet, kind, and sexy as hell, he is also family oriented and a great partner to Madison!

I loved that Madison, the heroine, wasn't written to be the 'perfect' mom and depicted every day parent struggles. Lots of moments that are relatable, funny and adorable! The kids were cute!

Things were so good and I began to wonder what the "issue"/struggle for the couple will be. Again, remember I said this was "low drama". Without including spoilers, the 'cause for heartache" was one that totally caused an eye roll and made you want to get in the heroine's face and yell "HELLO! That can't happen! Just do some research!!". But alas, since you can't yell at the characters, you just listen on and hope the "fix" comes along fast!

Narrators' Review:
Wen and Kai do a great job with their performance. I think this was one of Kai's best of the ones I've listened to as there were less instances of when it seemed a bit over the top when it came to show sarcasm.

There were a few characters that were of Latino descents and spoke Spanish.... I did love hearing Wen speak Spanish... yum... with that said, there were a few instances that included mispronunciations. They weren't major (i.e. hombre (man) instead of hambre (hungry)) per say, but listeners who are bi-lingual will pick this up and might distract from the flow of the story.

Overall, this was a really good audiobook and I'm glad I listened to it! Nicole wrote a really nice love story with characters readers would love and want to befriend!

Audiobook Review: Wicked Bite by Rebecca Zanetti

Wicked Bite
(Realm Enforcers Book 5)
by Rebecca Zanetti
Narrated by Brock Thompson

Blurb:

“Fast-paced romance . . . very compelling. Highly recommended.” —Library Journal

As she hunts for a drug lord killing her fellow witches, all Nessa Lansa’s instincts point to the Grizzly motorcycle club. That might be because their leader, Bear, is the strong, silent shifter type: warm brown eyes and more muscle and alpha male than any woman can ignore. Which makes Nessa’s plan to seduce and betray him all the more dangerous . . .

Bear doesn’t trust the curvy, blue-eyed witch. But Nessa can heal the injuries that sap his strength. And since he can’t stop thinking of her lush body and teasing smile, her plan to mate him to reclaim her own power is highly tempting. Just one problem. Once a desire this wild is loose, no one will ever control it . . .

Available for purchase at

Viviana's Review:
OMG! I've been waiting to get Bear's story and this did not disappoint! It was fast paced and had the right amount and blend of romance, suspense, action and everything we've come to love about this series!!

We've gotten glimpses of Bear in the first few books but we knew he was a good guy and we hoped that we got to know more about this sexy man. I was extremely happy that Bear had a larger part in the previous book and we also got to see a different side of the man (no worries, he still is grumpy and completely alpha).

Nessa, oh Nessa! She has a plan and runs with it. She comes across a bit meek and vulnerable though that's not the case... at all. She was strong and smart which is something I LOVE in my heroines!

Narrator Review:
Oh I LOVE Brock Thompson's performance! Besides giving each of the characters their own tones/voices, his yummy voice in general, I love how he performs female characters. He totally brings the characters to life!

Overall, while I'm sadden that this is the last book in this series, I've LOVED each and every one! This one isn't any different! I do hope that Rebecca will revisit these characters or create a spin-off!

Rating: 4.5 Stars - I REALLY LOVED IT

About COME AS YOU ARE (Coming 4/16/2018):

I couldn’t have scripted a more perfect night.

For one fantastic evening, at a masquerade party in the heart of Manhattan, I’m not the millionaire everyone wants a piece of. Fine—multimillionaire. But who’s counting all those commas? Not me, and not the most intriguing woman I've ever met, who happens to like dancing, witty banter, and hot, passionate up-against-the-wall sex as much as I do.

There's no need for names or business cards. And that’s why I’m eager to get to know her more, since my mystery woman seems to like me for me, rather than for my huge…bank account.

Everything’s coming up aces. Until the next day when things get a little complicated. (Newsflash — a lot complicated.)

***

He's charming, brilliant, an incredible lover, and right now I want to stab fate in the eyeballs.

I've had one goal I've been working toward, and lo and behold, my mystery man is the very person who stands between me and my dream job. A job I desperately need since my hard-knock life has nothing in common with his star-kissed one.

But it’s time to put that fairytale night behind me, and focus on learning what makes him tick. Too bad it turns out his quirks are my quirks, and his love affair with New York matches mine.

And as we spend our days together, I discover something else that feels like a cruel twist of fate — I’m falling for this naughty prince charming, and that’s not an ending I can write to our story.

Deadline
(Blood Trails Series, Bk 1)
By Jennifer Blackstream

Blurb:

As a witch with a dark past, Shade Renard knows the Otherworld isn’t always successful at policing itself. Humans don’t believe in magic anymore, and their ignorance renders them easy prey. So when an FBI contact hires her to consult on a possible haunting in a missing persons case, Shade seizes the opportunity to see justice done.

Her case takes an unexpected turn when an undead crime lord shows up on her doorstep. A bold thief stole the vampire’s little black book of secrets—and he’ll pay a lot more than an FBI consulting fee to get it back. To collect, Shade will have to confront a rogue sorceress, a vengeful wizard, and a lethally seductive fey, with only her wits, her growing magic, and a sarcastic pixie familiar.

Success means bringing a killer to justice and taking the first step to redemption. Failure means a war between humans and the Otherworld.

No pressure.

Excerpt

“Didn’t you say you weren’t drinking soda anymore?”
I popped the top on the can of Coke and took a defiant swig, more than a little satisfied at the squeak of dismay that came from my judgmental familiar as she wavered on her perch atop my head. “I earned this. I killed a eurypterid before breakfast. Two eurypterids. And I almost died. Not to mention, Mrs. Harvesty kept me on the phone for ten minutes talking about that cat.
“I hate cats.” Peasblossom clung to my head like a living barrette. “Nasty beasties, always try to eat me like I’m a flying snack. Barbaric.”
“I love cats. I just don’t want to drop everything because Mrs. Harvesty claims her furry little child is having an emotional crisis.”
“Emotional crisis?”
“The kitten is refusing to come out of his mummy’s boot.” I held a sip of Coke in my mouth for a moment as if I were sampling fine wine.
Peasblossom snickered. “Puss in Boots.”
I snorted, then swore as carbonated soda shot up my nose, burning like fire. Peasblossom careened off my head in a fit of mad giggles as I ran to the stove and the faded blue hand towel hanging there.
“Blood and bones, that burns,” I wheezed, squeezing my eyes shut as I pressed the towel to my nose.
More laughter made me open my eyes in time to watch Peasblossom fly in a semi-drunken bobbing path to land on the counter beside the stove. Tears of mirth glittered in her pink eyes, matching the iridescent sparkles on her insect-like wings. “Serves you right for drinking a second soda.
I glared at her for a few minutes as I waited for the burning to stop. When I’d recovered, I replaced the wet towel with a clean one and deposited the soda-and-snot-spotted cloth in the hamper. “If you’re quite finished, perhaps you could run me through today’s to-do list? I want to make sure I didn’t forget anything.”
Still giggling, Peasblossom flew to the large desk in the dining room and picked up a sheet of notebook paper tucked beside the laptop. “Settle dispute between the hamadryads over who’s the eldest,” she read.
“Done. Once they realized the only way to age a tree is to lop off a piece of it, they were happy to call it a draw.”
“Find out if a goblin ate the Roberts’ dog.”
“No. Sgt. Pepper was hiding under the neighbor’s house again. Mrs. Barns just didn’t want to admit it because she didn’t want to hear Mr. Roberts accuse her of trying to steal his dog for the tenth time. Sgt. Pepper went home when he got hungry.”
Peasblossom peered at me over the top of the list. “Find an office.”
I took a long swig of the soda, avoiding eye contact. “Move it to tomorrow.”
“Again,” Peasblossom said under her breath. She put the paper down and hefted a miniature pen she’d taken from a child’s art kit. Sticking out her tongue in concentration, she made a notation on the to-do list.
Aluminum groaned as I tightened my grip. “I will do it.
“Of course you will. Because you’re going to be a real detective.”
“Private investigator. And yes, I am.”
“Mother Hazel won’t like it.”
I clenched my teeth. No, my mentor wouldn’t like it. I could hear her voice now, telling me to leave the battling to the wizards—witches had more important things to do.
Like play psychiatrist to a cat.
I strode over to the desk, put the can of soda down with a determined thunk, then snatched up a stack of Post-its and a black fine-point marker. Peasblossom watched as I scrawled, “Find an office today,” and underlined today three times. I stuck the reminder to the frame of my computer screen.
“You used a hot-pink Post-it. You must be serious now.”
I ignored her sarcasm. I would find an office tomorrow. It was time.

About The Author

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Blackstream is…odd. Putting aside the fact that she writes her own author bio in third person, she also sleeps with a stuffed My Little Pony that her grandmother bought her as a joke for her 23rd birthday, and she enjoys listening to Fraggle Rock soundtracks whether or not her children are in the car.

Jennifer doesn’t have spare time, but she makes it a point to spend at least one night a week with her sibling binge-watching whatever show they’re currently plowing through (currently Numbers on Netflix), and she ferociously guards quality time with her son and daughter. She cooks when she has the sanity for it—adding garlic to the recipe whether it calls for it or not—and tries very hard not to let her arachnophobia keep her out of her basement on laundry day.

Jennifer’s influences include Terry Pratchett (for wit), Laurell K. Hamilton (for sexual tension), Jim Butcher (for roguish flair), and Kim Harrison (for mythos). She is currently writing the series of her heart and her dreams, the series that has been percolating in her brain for the last decade…Blood Trails. An Urban Fantasy Mystery series that will combine the classic whodunit spirit with a contemporary fantasy setting. Expect mystery, magic, and mayhem, with characters that will make you laugh, cry, and probably stare at the screen with your jaw hanging down to the floor. Well, that’s how they affect Jennifer anyway…

Audiobook Review: The Secret Life of Cooper Bennett by Golden Czermak

The Secret Life of Cooper Bennett
by Golden Czermak
Narrated by Wen Ross & Kai Kennicott

Blurb:

COOPER BENNETT is a high school senior living a hard and abusive life in the sleepy town of Goodman, GA.

One night, a monstrous burden is thrust upon him with the potential to unlock the better life he’s always wanted; one filled with love from the girl of his dreams and strengthened childhood friendships.

However, the effects of his actions do not go unnoticed.

Grayson Manning and his athletic son Liam see things far differently, doing everything in their power to send all Cooper has affected into ruin before he and the dangerous Lance Goddard manage to do the same to them.

Available for purchase at

Viviana's Review:
This is the first book by Golden Czermak I've 'read'/listened to. When I first learned of this book I was intrigued as the cover caught my attention. Then when I learned Wen Ross would be narrating the audiobook, I added it to my "TBL" (i.e. to be listened) list.

THE SECRET LIFE OF COOPER BENNETT begins at a slow pace and continues with that pace as the story develops and we learn more about the characters and events. I was fine with the pace but had major issues keeping track during the first half of the book due to the jumping of dates between past events and present day. The characters also provide their backstories/memories via flashbacks and dates are also use. This also makes it hard to follow a tad as well since you're trying to piece in where exactly things fit into the story. Eventually towards the end of the story, the posting of the dates becomes less of an issue, but its more because the events are occurring in order.

There is a large cast of characters and many play an important role at one point or another, however keeping track of them with the date jumping.

The story begins with Cooper and his best friend Billy both being 18 years old and seniors in high school. As the story progress, Cooper turns 19 yrs old. There are many instances where they come across younger than the age we are told they are. There are also a few instances where some of their actions or thoughts went against their characters (from what we've read). This could easily be a YA with the exception of one scene.

The story has intrigue and its interesting how things turn out.

Narrator's Review:
Wen does a great job with all the numerous male characters, giving them each their own tones and voices. This is great because of the vast number of male characters which allows the reader to follow along easier. This is performed in duet and Kai does a great job as well, those there are less female characters in the story.

Overall, this is an interesting story in which the ending leaves it open for additional books. There are some twists and though it may be hard to follow at first because of the back and forth in time, I'm glad I picked this up and look forward to the next book.

Rating: 2.5 Stars - it was okay
