Release Day Blitz: Rescued by the Wolf by Sasha Summers

His need for vengeance can't compete with his hunger for her.

Rescued by the Wolf
(Blood Moon Brotherhood Series, #2)
by Sasha Summers

Blurb:

Mal wants one thing in life—vengeance against those that deserted him and those who tortured him. But rescuing a wounded girl from their captors, one that wreaks of innocence and fear, makes Mal put his plan on hold. Temporarily. He’ll do what he needs to keep her alive and safe, even if it changes both of their lives forever.

Being stabbed and held in a dark cell wasn’t on Olivia’s top ten list. Her savior isn’t exactly hero material. Angry, scarred, and pissed at the world, he seems to resent being saddled with her. But the longer they’re together, the more firmly a connection forms between them. A connection that binds her to him, his pack, and his world. But that connection may just lead to her death.

The bear hobbled into the tree line, Mal let him go. Mal ran to Olivia’s side. He circled, sniffing her. The bear had torn into her wounded leg, its teeth leaving an angry open wound. It was a miracle she wasn’t already dead. The wolf howled again and again, unable to bear the thought of losing her.

And dammit, neither could Mal. He whimpered, desperate to save her.

“I give you permission to eat me,” she muttered, blood covering her chest and leg. “If you’ll let me die first, please?” She was serious, he could tell. If he’d been in human form, he’d laugh—then tell her to be strong. But with her wounds, she couldn’t tough this out, and no tourniquet would make this better.
Something hard and jagged settled into his chest. Save her. It was a plea. No, he couldn’t do that to her.
Death was peaceful…

She held her hand out, startled when he pressed his head into her hand. Why did her touch have to ease him? “I don’t want to die,” she said, crying then, covering her face with her hands and sobbing uncontrollably.

Don’t let her die. The wolf pleaded.

He couldn’t leave her alone to deal with this. He shifted quickly, knowing he’d feel it in his muscles and joints later.

“Olivia?” he gasped.

“Mal?” Her voice was panicked, her hands dropped from her face. “Run, Mal! You have to run. There’s a wolf. And a bear.”

“Hush,” he argued, inspecting her injuries while fighting for control. Save her. His wolf demanded it.

“Don’t…hush me. I’m dying, I think.” She stared at him, her hazel eyes clear and huge in her pale face. She’d lost so much blood. “You’re a gorgeous man, Mal. I’m glad I got to kiss you before I die.” Her hand rose, trembling, so he took it in his.

“You’re a beautiful woman, Olivia Chase.” He cleared his throat, knowing he should swallow back the words that tried to force their way out. Death was a natural part of life. People died all the time. Sometimes naturally, sometimes not. Olivia Chase was a sweet girl, someone who’d had something horrible happen to her. But that didn’t mean he was supposed to step in and change her fate. He’d promised his pack. He knew how fucked up this life was.

But the words came out anyway. He couldn’t stop them—maybe he didn’t want to. “Let me save you,” he whispered.

“Congratulations, you’re the father.” Hollis sounded like he was announcing time of death, not the birth of a child.

Finn stared blindly out the window, anger and frustration warring with utter disbelief. “You’re sure?” He couldn’t keep the razor-sharp edge from his voice. Hollis was just the messenger—one of the few people Finn could trust, one of the few that stood by him no matter what. He was the asshole who knocked up a long-forgotten one-night stand. How was the question. He was always careful. Extra careful when it came to sex. He had to be. “I met her four months ago, Hollis. Are you sure?” His grip on the phone tightened.

“I’m sure it’s yours. A full-term, healthy baby. I can’t guarantee much more.” Hollis’s voice remained calm, almost detached, as always. “Cara didn’t make it. She has no family, no one to challenge custody of the baby.”

Cara. She’d been so full of life, so hungry for the next big adventure. What they’d shared had been fast and furious. When they’d parted, it had been on good terms, no expectations or regrets. How could she be dead?

Hollis’s words grabbed his attention. “Looking at the body—I’m not sure what happened.”

“So, not a car accident?” Finn had wondered. Guilt and sadness kicked him in the gut.

“That would be the easy explanation. One that will be her official cause of death.”

“But?”

“But I think there’s more to it.” Hollis sighed. “There’s always more to it when we are involved. I’m going to have a look at her records, see what needs to be taken care of. I hate to point this out but…this isn’t going to go over well with the others.”

“No shit,” Finn growled. “It’s not exactly making my day, either.” Hollis hadn’t said it, but Finn knew the truth. Cara’s death was on him. His fucking fault.

“No, I don’t imagine it is.” He paused, the silence loaded until he added, “As unfortunate as that is, he can’t stay here.”

“He?” Finn repeated, his brain already assessing damage control.

“Your son,” Hollis finally snapped. “This is dangerous, Finn.”

Because there was nobody or nothing like his…son. This boy could jeopardize everything they’d been striving for the last ten years. Words wouldn’t come. His son. He might be a baby now, but what the hell would he become? What would he be capable of? Self-loathing, hot and bitter, flooded Finn’s mouth.

“Jesus, Finn, are you listening?” Hollis paused. “He can’t stay in the hospital. I’ve been handling tests, all his bloodwork, but I can’t be here twenty-four seven. You must come get him. He’s your responsibility.”

Hollis was right. And there wasn’t a single thing he could do about it. “Fine.” The word was clipped.

“Today,” Hollis added.

Meaning Finn needed to work faster on finding help. The initial call from Cara’s agent the night before had given him a heads-up, but he’d known the kid wasn’t his. It had been too soon, an impossibility. Now… He ran a hand through his hair, wanting to hit something. “Give me ‘til noon. I’ll be there.” He sat in his tall-backed leather chair, slammed the phone onto the desk, and pressed his fingers to his temples.

What the fuck was he supposed to do? Babies weren’t dogs—you couldn’t put them in a kennel for the day. He wasn’t equipped for this. His assistant, Marjorie, had pulled employee files for him last night—right before she’d quit. And this time, he didn’t think she was coming back.

He’d met with two of the three assistants he deemed acceptable this morning. Neither was suitable. Nor did they act as if they could deal with the sort of surprises that might come with this baby. Contestant number three was his only hope. It’s not like he could just call a nanny service, not yet. He’d have to wait a month. If this baby… He sighed, rolling his head and easing the tension in his neck.

Hollis was right – this was dangerous for them. Too many unknowns, too many variables, to turn over to a stranger.

Tom sat on the side of the double bed that Merle kept for company. “This is nice.”

“I’ll have a better place when my house is done. The bathroom is across the hall. The towels are clean. I’ll see if I have an extra toothbrush.”

Tom looked up with those big eyes. “Thank you for saving me.”

“I’m just glad you called.”

“I didn’t know who else to call. I was thinking maybe Billy if I couldn’t get you.” He looked at his hands folded in his lap. “I figured you’d be with Renee.”

“No. We left right after you did, and I came here.”

Tom glanced up quickly and then back down.

Merle swallowed a little too loudly. “I might have some pajama bottoms that will fit you, but they’ll be way too short.”

“That’s okay. I’ll wear my undies.”

“So, uh, sleep well.” He turned and practically raced to his own room before his nobility faded.

Tom stared at his hands some more. Merle sure did want to go back to sleep. I must have bothered him. But I’m still happy he came to get me. I didn’t want to fuck Aaron or even suck his cock like he said.

Tom stood and walked to the bathroom across the hall. He glanced toward the other door just a little way away. That’s where Merle is. Light still showed under the door. Not asleep yet.

No toothbrush. Merle forgot. But Tom found some toothpaste in a drawer and put some on his finger and slid it around. After rinsing, he peed, washed his hands and face, and went back into the bedroom, stripped to his boxer briefs, and hung his jeans and shirt and jacket on hangers in the closet.

He pulled back the covers and found nice white sheets, then crawled in and flipped off the light beside the bed. Wonder if Merle’s asleep? I hope the boys are okay and don’t miss me too much. He almost never left them overnight. Mrs. A. wouldn’t like it if he did it very much. The boys wouldn’t like it either.

He sighed and stretched his hands behind his head. I shouldn’t have said I’d go dancing with Aaron. Why did I do that?

He followed the patterns of headlights streaking across the wall through a gap in the curtains. I like to dance. His lips compressed in a line. I wanted to dance, but not with Aaron. I wanted to dance with Merle. He smiled. I got to and it was rad. Merle’s the best dancer ever.

Oh boy. He shook his head. I really like Merle. I never should’ve said I’d go with Aaron when I wanted to go with Merle. That was dumb. And not very nice. He blew out his breath in a long stream and felt it tickle his chest. But Merle didn’t ask me.

Flipping to his side, he stroked the soft sheets. But maybe Merle wants me to ask him. When I called him, he came right away like—like nobody ever has. What would he do if I just told him?
