Audio Book Review: The Billionaire’s Favorite Mistake by Jessica Clare

The Billionaire's Favorite Mistake
(Billionaires and Bridesmaids, Book 4)
By Jessica Clare
Narrated By Jillian Macie

Blurb:
A hot one night stand between friends might spark true love in the latest Billionaires and Bridesmaids novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Billionaire Takes a Bride.

Greer has always been there for Asher, but she wishes she could break through her shyness and show how much she truly loves him. But after a steamy, mindless fling at Hunter and Gretchen’s engagement party, Greer finds herself tossed aside and forced to admit that you can’t love someone who doesn’t acknowledge you exist.

It’s a shame he got her pregnant.

After his fiancée betrayed him and tanked his business in one fell swoop, Asher has spent his time trying to rebuild his wealth and forget the past. But he doesn’t understand why Greer blew him off after their night together—until he catches a glimpse of her belly.

Now Asher is willing to do whatever it takes to convince Greer she belongs with him. And he’s very skilled at the art of persuasion.

Viviana's Review:
I want to begin this review by saying I've really enjoyed all the previous books in this series and her other Billionaire series. She doesn't follow "traditional" plots and character steroid typical ideas. I was really looking forward to this installment. When I read the blurb, it made me raise an eyebrow because the concept/idea has been done before but I wanted to see how Jessica would spin this overly done trope as she's done in the past....

Unfortunately, "The Billionaire's Favorite Mistake" falls into every trope possible which makes this a disappointing read/listen.

  • Heroine loves/wants/lusts after her BFF (Hero)
  • Hero sees heroine as only his BFF / sister type
  • Heroine believes she needs to "change" in order to be "seen" / acknowledge by Hero
  • Hero hitting bottom low due to broken heart
  • Heroine decides to proclaim her feelings even though Hero  is drunk (obviously drunk)
  • Hero is horny and decides having a quickie in a public area with his BFF is a good idea - unprotected sex to boot
  • Heroine goes along with Hero's sexual advances
  • Heroine gets mad as the sex isn't what she expected and decide to no longer be friends with Hero
  • Weeks later we find out Heroine is pregnant and she decides to cut the Hero out of "Her" baby's life
  • Both the Hero and the readers find out Heroine was a virgin
  • Hero decides he should have seen Heroine for what she truly was... and decides to woo her.

And basically it continues to downward spiral with bad plans to get the Heroine to forgive the Hero and the Heroine constantly second guessing his attraction and feelings for her as well as the author trying to make the heroine "behave" in control (i.e. sexual relationship with hero) but it's not convincing.

I hoped it would get better... it never does. I'm not sure why Jessica went the route she did wth the plot and character development (or lack there of).

Narrator's Review:
Jillian Macie does a good job with her performance. This makes the book bearable.

Overall, I was disappointed with this read and wished things were different because the rest of the series is really good. A fun read! Also, this can be read as a standalone and I can't recommend this particular book. Sigh... fingers crossed the next book will go back to the "norm".

Snippet:

She removed her hand and petted his stomach as if he were a docile panther. Simon discovered restraint he never knew he had.

Ella’s fingers moved down and fondled a tiny bulge in his pocket. “What’s this?”

Simon carried a miniature chess piece in his pocket—a queen to be exact. “Love, that’s not the piece I want you to stroke.”

She looked up at him, her lips pursing together. “Shhh.”

Women never took control of Simon this way, and just the thought of it made him so weak with lust that he wasn’t sure he’d be able to hold out for the actual act.

Ella went down on her knees and pressed her lips against the stretched leather covering his erection. He nearly lost it. Images flooded his mind of sliding somewhere warm and wet. Suddenly his throat went dry. He flattened his palms against the wall behind him, intoxicated by her unpredictable nature. There was no sense in taking over and trying to dominate her in the bedroom; her needs were nonnegotiable.

Blog Tour: Dragon Fever by Donna Grant

Dragon Fever - Tour banner

The highly anticipated DRAGON FEVER (Dark Kings Series, #9.5) by Donna Grant is finally here! This novella is brought to you by the 1001 Dark Nights!

Viviana's Review:
With each new story, we are driven deeper into the Dark Kings world. We've met several Dragon Kings, their mates, the enemies, Fae (both Light and Dark) and continue to be engrossed in their world. We're also intrigued as there are several 'mysteries' surrounding the Dragon Kings.
With all these characters and how deep into the series we are at this point, I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series if you're considering reading this series.

Donna Grant continues to keep us enthralled with these characters and the world she has created.  Fans of the series will be happy with this novella until the next full book. As with all of the previous books, you have the Alpha males and the steamy scenes. You will not be disappointed.

Dragon Fever - Tour teaser 1

   Excerpt

When his mouth claimed hers, his tongue slid along the seam of her lips. They parted for him, on their own accord, granting him access to do as he wished. His arms wrapped around her, holding her securely. With a sigh, she melted against him.
She tasted the whisky on his tongue. The exotic taste mixed with his kiss caused her blood to heat. Her hands splayed on his chest before moving upward to lock around his neck. With a groan that rumbled his chest, he deepened the kiss.
Then something strange happened. Warmth spread through her, settling low in her belly. At first she thought she was going to be sick, but the more he kissed her, the more the warmth grew––until it was a fire.
And did it rage.
It burned brightly, scalding her with its intensity. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. And she didn’t care. All that mattered was that he continue kissing her, taking her further along this incredible journey.
Then that wasn’t enough. She wanted…no, she needed more. As if sensing her thoughts, he turned her so that her back was to the railing. His heat surrounded her. Every breath she drew into her lungs was filled with his scent of dark amber and mahogany. The longer they kissed, the more fiery and out of control their kisses became.
It was Asher who gradually pulled away. She struggled to find words, to tell him she didn’t want it to end. Her lids slid closed when his thumb ran over her bottom lip and he groaned.
She leaned into him, hoping he would kiss her again. This feeling…this sensation…was awful and amazing. She didn’t know whether to fight it or give in, but her body didn’t give her a choice.
Asher didn’t say a word as he laced his fingers with hers and turned toward the hotel. They walked in silence once more, becoming more in tune to him with every step she took. She could literally feel their souls intertwining and melding.

She should be scared, and she was. But she was also excited and aroused to the point that she wanted to crawl out of her skin. He’d done that to her. When no other had caused even a hint of desire, he had brought an inferno.

Excerpt

Ian knew which bedroom was Braden’s from the four or five times he’d chased or carried Anderson down the hall—but this was the first time he’d been in it. Wow. Beyond the tall glass windows, the moon left a pathway on the midnight black water showing sparkles of white foam. Somewhere below, the surf crashed against the cliff, not only rumbling, but setting up a light vibration that shivered through Ian’s feet straight into his balls.

Man, if anything revealed their stark differences, this room did it. Grown-up with a capital G. Here he was living off the charity of his brother and Ken, while Braden got to sleep in a room like this. Think of all he’d accomplished in his thirty-six years. Of course, when it came to sex—gay sex—Ian came out on top in the experience department by a lot—pardon the pun. That makes me feel a little better. Of course, he wouldn’t be topping tonight. Sticking it in took a lot less practice than receiving it. Whew. That cock in his ass? Just the thought sent his dick into heat-seeking mode.

“Admiring the view?”

Ian looked over his shoulder at Braden, who stood framed in the doorway. Ian smiled softly. “I am now.”

“Me too.”

“You say the sweetest things.”

“You make it easy.”

“Nervous?”

Braden grinned and leaned against the doorframe. Impossibly sexy. “What’s the old saying? Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs?”

“As a whore in church?” Ian took two steps toward Braden.

Braden pushed away from the door and moved forward a step. “As a prize turkey in November.”

“As a cat at a dog show.” Two more steps.

“As a pig in a bacon factory.” They were only a couple of feet apart.

“As the owner of a ceiling-fan store with a comb-over.”

Braden barked a laugh. “I give up. You win.”

Ian slid his hand across Braden’s cheek. A day’s growth of beard. Nice. “What do I get for a prize?”

Braden sighed and the words slid out like butter. “Anything you want.”

“Want to fuck me?”

“Oh yeah.”

“Have you done this much?”

He shrugged. “Some.”

“Got supplies?”

“Yeah, although the condoms may have been used by the Neanderthals.”

“Now who’s bragging?”

He flushed and stared at his shoes. “I meant the age.”

“I know, but then I’ve already met Mr. Neanderthal down there, so don’t be downplaying his stats.” He grinned.
