Book Review: Unexpected Rush by Jaci Burton

Unexpected Rush
(Play by Play Series, Bk #11)
by Jaci Burton

Blurb:
In the new Play-By-Play novel by the New York Times bestselling author of All Wound Up, a football hot shot and his best friend’s sister are breaking all the rules.

All the Right Moves

For Barrett Cassidy, playing defense for the Tampa Hawks is a dream come true. And now he may have discovered his dream woman. Harmony Evans, once the sweet, gawky teenage sister of his best friend and teammate has grown into a smart, gorgeous woman with moves he finds hard to resist. But he knows he can’t get involved with his best friend’s sister—it’s guy code.

Harmony has always gone after what she wants with single-minded determination, from her independence to her education to her career in interior design. She never expected her youthful crush on Barrett to develop into something deeper. And she’s not about to let some ridiculous man rules or her brother stand in her way.

When the chemistry is this combustible, lines tend to get crossed. And when Barrett and Harmony’s secret gets out, it just might be game over...

Viviana's Review:
It no secret that I am a recent fan of Jaci and picked up the series "Play by Play" on book #9 after enjoying all those yummy covers for so long. Book 9, "Quarterback Draw" was the start of what I'm calling the "Cassidy Dynasty" within the series. This is due to the story arc of the 'players' per say as it has focused on the Cassidy brothers and I didn't feel like I would be lost in the series. Loved "Quarterback Draw" and those that have followed.

"Unexpected Rush" touches on the taboo of the guy dating his BFF's sister. Apparently there's some sort of "Guy Code" (insert eye roll). Barrett Cassidy has known Harmony Evans for years! She's the younger sister of his BFF and teammate. Though she had a crush on Barrett growing up, she didn't plan on having one as an adult. The chemistry is there and so are the circumstances and various situations continue to place them in each other's path.

No doubt that Jaci can write a steamy romance. "Unexpected Rush" doesn't disappoint in this aspect.

The Cassidy family is alas awesome and you want to join them - either by going out with one of the guys or you'll accept their awesomeness, love and loyalty as an adoptive sister of some sort.

Though Harmony claimed to be a strong and independent woman, I didn't like that she was okay with keeping the relationship a secret or rather pretending that there wasn't one. Even more so that Barrett went along with it and thought it was a good idea. While I get its a story, I wish the need for the relationship to longer be a secret came sooner vs. later. I want women to know their worth ... heck men too.

The ending.... a bit rushed... perhaps.... meant due to the title.

We get a glimpse of the next book and I'm intrigued.

overall a good steamy read that moves the series along.

Rating: 3.5 Stars - I really liked it.

Also available in paperback

Viviana's Review:

A novella in the "Searching For" series, written for the 1001 Dark Nights collection, "Searching for Mine" is an excellent example of how this collaboration works! This is a series I have had on my TBR for a while. I have the paperback! As the saying goes "Too many books, not enough time". Atlas, as more time passed and more books get added to the series, a get gets a bit scared and overwhelmed. "Will I like it?" "Can I commit to that many?" One of the things I'm really enjoying about the 110 Dark Nights collection is it allows readers to sample the author and series. So glad I grabbed "Searching for Mine".

I truly love Jennifer's writing style and how she develops her characters. The stories flow and the reader is entertained and gets lost in the world she created.

The 'student/teacher' taboo was BRILLIANTLY done here that no eye was batted. PERFECT! Loved that she was not only 'immune" to his "charmed" but that she called him out on his "old fashion" (lets call it that to be nice, shall we) thinking was fantastic. Ella, the heroine is funny, witty sarcastic and calls it like she sees it. LOVE her!

Conner is pleasant on the eye, a charmer and apparently "thinks" he knows how to get what he wants. I loved his nurturing and caring side. He is the brother of Nate who was the hero in a previous book. Those that read "Searching for Perfect" will know Conner a tad, but more as a "playboy" apparently. We "hear" more about this here.

Really enjoyed seeing Ella's and Conner's relationship develop from teacher/student to friends to lovers. The chemistry is there but it adds to that under lying layer that relations need that is ore than just physical.

I tend to be a bit hesitant about reading novellas as I feel they are either rushed or you don't get a complete story. This isn't the case with "Searching for Mine". You get a complete story that makes you want to read the rest of the series. A talent that Jennifer has. :)

Rating: 4 Stars - Loved It

Book Review: The Confessions by Tiffany Reisz

The Confessions
(AN ORIGINAL SINNERS COLLECTION)
by Tiffany Reisz

Blurb:

Three Sinners. Three confessions. And all the dirty little secrets you could possibly desire...

Father Stuart Ballard has been Marcus Stearns' confessor since the young Jesuit was only eighteen years old. He thought he'd heard every sin the boy had to confess until Marcus uttered those three fateful words: "I met Eleanor."

So begins the 40-page "The Confession of Marcus Stearns," a moving coda to the RITA® Award-winning Original Sinners series. Originally published as a limited-edition paperback for the 2014 RT Booklovers' Convention, and available worldwide for the first time.

This collection also includes "The Confession of Eleanor Schreiber," a companion 36-page story written exclusively for this book.

And, finally, all secrets are revealed in "The Confession of Tiffany Reisz," an exclusive, in-depth interview.

Available for purchase at

Viviana's Review:
I love it when authors provide you with insight to the characters we love! "The Confessions" is a set of three short stories where we as the reader learn more about Marcus Stearns, Eleanor Schreiber and Tiffany Reisz! Throughout the Original Sinners series, we've met Father Stuart Ballard in spurts and glimpses! I've always wondered how he dealt/managed being friends with Soren and Nora and being in the know of what their world consisted of. I think we have this pre-conceived notion of what a "Priest" is like and how they should "be" which leads to some curiosity as to who is Father Stuart Ballard.

As the blurb says these are short stories or rather confessions and best read after reading the Original Sinners Series. I truly enjoyed reading these confessions and learning more about these fascinated characters.

It was an intriguing read as you were not only getting Nora's and Soren's (via their confession) POV, but you were getting an exclusive, a peak into their most inner emotions and thoughts on top of getting to know this other Priest.... because again, we have all wondered about him at one point or another.

I loved it and highly recommend this read. Tiffany, the author has suggested it be read AFTER all the book in the series have been read due to spoilers. I will admit to only reading the "White Years" of the series and needing to play catch up with the original books. However, I couldn't resist. Really.... the title, the characters... the novels... the author... Granted.. if you never read the series, hold off. It will be worth the wait.

As with everything Tiffany has written that I've read, I loved the writing style and the characters's own unique personalities shine through.

Rating: 4.5 Stars I REALLY LOVED IT

Viviana's Review:

And it keeps getting better! Book 3 in the "Reapers" Series and I'm still enthralled in the overarching arc of the story line as well as the romance and potential romance for each of the characters AKA Reapers. Donna has done a phenomenal job of creating this world  which is a spin off of her "Dark Kings" series.

Uhm... let me take a minute to share that usually, a spin off will/may bring characters or a story line into one another, but not necessarily entwined them. Up until this point/book, I would have said "Sure, you don't 'have' to read the Dark Kings / Reapers series to fully get/enjoy what's going on in each of their worlds...." However, there are characters that are beginning to cross over from the Dark Kings into the Reapers and vice versa that while are currently standing fine along this story line, there is a whole lot going on in their backstory that occurs in the Dark Kings series. I'm also anticipating a similar cross over of certain characters from the Reapers to cross over to the Dark Kings.  So... if you are enjoying the Reapers, you will enjoy the Dark Kings Series and you have time to catch up before the next release.

If you like PNR and looking for a breath of fresh air, check out the REAPERS Series! The heroines are strong, the heroes, while Alpha males, they do not step over the line of being an A-hole. The story line is creative as there are twists and turns and certain aspects of the story line that are kept a mystery. You also get your romance and the steaminess that Donna Grant is known for!

Audio Book Review: Wildest Dreams by Kristen Ashley

Wildest Dreams
(Fantasyland Series, Bk #1)
By Kristen Ashley
Narrated by Tillie Hooper

Blurb:
Seoafin "Finnie" Wilde was taught by her parents that every breath was a treasure and to seek every adventure she could find. And she learns this lesson the hard way when they perish in a plane crash. But she never forgets, and when she discovers there is a parallel universe where every person has a twin, she finds a witch who can send her there so she can have the adventure of a lifetime. But upon arrival in the Winter Wonderland of Lunwyn, she realizes she's been played by her twin and finds herself walking down the aisle to be wed to The Drakkar.

Thrown into inauspicious circumstances, with years of practice, Finnie bests the challenges and digs into her adventure. But as Frey Drakkar discovers the woman who is his new wife is not Princess Sjofn, a woman he dislikes, but instead his Finnie, a free spirit with a thirst for adventure just like him, without her knowledge he orders his new bride bound to his frozen world, everlasting. But at the same time, Frey plunges Finnie into a web of political intrigue that includes assassination plots, poison, magic, mystery and...dragons.

Viviana's Review: Wow... uhm... where to start? It's all good though... it's just that there's A LOT going on and it was listening 18 hrs and 49 mins ... It's all worth it though!. This is my first dive into this series from Kristen Ashley and while I originally didn't think I'd be into this series when I first learned about it... my interest peaked after I read her book BOUNTY... here's the truth... I've read her UNFINISHED HEROES series and LOVED IT. She has her other series the ROCK CHICKS.... I hear mix reviews but always willing to give things a try... just not yet. I had the opportunity to review the audio book of BOUNTY from Colorado Mountain. Bounty is book 7 in the series and this cemented that I am TOTALLY GooGooGaga over Kristen (okay, lets be honest... more than I already was). So when the opportunity arose to listen to WILDEST DREAMS, book 1 of a five book series, I jumped at the chance and I'm so happy I did!

There is a LOT of world building and lots of descriptive narrative (Kristen likes to paint you the picture) however, this is done from the POV of the heroine, Finnie, who is experiencing this world for the first time as well as ours! Yet, the manner in which it's described and the performance of the narrator, it doesn't feel like the story is 'dragging'. There were a few times where I did shake my head at Finnie's describing how "gorgeous" Frey was or how 'handsome', but I get that goes along with the territory...

I really enjoyed reading (well listening) to this story because the heroine is strong, smart, independent and adventurous! She seeks out the adventure and that's how she ended up in Lunwyn. I loved how she didn't complained or succumb to the situation or circumstances, instead she thrives and blossoms.

Ah... Frey Drakkar... typical of Kristen's males... he's a complete Alpha, YET.... can be a complete sweetheart to his Finnie! It was a breathe of fresh air to get to know him as a character, because he was true to himself but never an ass to the heroine. Granted... certain events when they first met he may not have been pleasant, but this was due to his knowledge of the original Sjofn. Upon learning the truth... he does everything within his powers to make things right between them and goes above and beyond to make things easier for her.

There was definitely the attraction between the Hero and Heroine, but the passion grows further as they get to know each other. While not a complete "slow burn" type of story, it isn't an "instant jump into your bed" sort of story either.

There is loss and heartache and moments that are joyous. It's a great mix of going through the emotions of a reader as they get to know new characters and of course some of the topics included such as "living life to its fullest" as well as "loving those you have in your life while you have them".

Narrator's Review:
Tillie Hooper NAILED IT! Her performance is great and provides the reader with ease of listening! She utilizes different tones and voices for each character and the narrative allowing the readers to follow along easily! She not only tells the story but keeps you engaged as well. I'm happy to see she's also narrating the second audio book in this series and look forward to seeing how she manages the different sets of characters.

Overall, I'm so happy I picked up this book as I now have another series to continue to discover and fall in love with. If you like/love Kristen Ashley's writing style, you'll fall for this series hard. Alpha Males, Strong Women, creative bantering, interesting worlds, I could go on and on.

Rating: LOVED IT!

Guest Post: Blue Moon by Lisa Kessler

Hi Everyone! I'm excited to have Author Lisa Kessler with us today chatting about her latest release! Please take a few minutes to learn more about BLUE MOON, Lisa and don't forget to enter the giveaway!

Hi everyone –

I’m excited to be visiting Viviana’s blog to chat about my new release, BLUE MOON. This is the sixth book in the Moon Series, but it’s easy to jump in if you haven’t read the others first.

I fell in LOVE with writing these loyal, protective, and occasionally hot-headed men. Logan is our hero for Blue Moon, but you’ll also get to see the rest of the Pack: Adam, Aren, Gareth, Jason, Jared and Luke.  Each man is different, but when the chips are down, they’ve got each other’s backs when they need it most.

But the Pack isn’t all… We’ve also got some jaguar shifters in the Moon Series. Some of the jaguars work for the nefarious Nero Organization, but two jaguar females are Pack members, blurring the lines between the two supernatural races.

I have so much fun writing this series, and Blue Moon was no exception. Logan is the lead singer of his alt rock band, Logan and the Howlers, but he really howls! No one in the band knows he’s a werewolf, and he intends to keep it that way, but when his mate comes back into town, sparks fly.

Vivianna was his best friend and high school sweetheart, but after his first shift he discovered she was also his one true mate, and that’s when things got dicey. Seeing them get back together and healing old wounds was beautiful and I loved seeing them finally get their happily ever after. It wasn’t easy, but they definitely earned it!

While these wolves might not always agree, they honor their Pack and fight to keep them safe. The extra strength, and heightened senses don’t hurt either…

So what about you?  What is it about a Shifter that keeps you coming back for more?

Lisa

Excerpt –  (We’re in Vivianna’s point of view)

I frowned and paused the recorder. The bastard was enjoying this. “I’d like to get this interview over as soon as possible.” I brushed my hair back over my shoulder, unable to miss the way Logan’s eyes tracked my every move. I straightened in my chair. Let him look. I wanted him to remember what he lost. “I didn’t come here for a walk down memory lane.”

“Sorry.” His jaw clenched as he stared outside. “I never should have agreed to this.”

“Excuse me?” I shook my head.

He got up, pacing near the window. “I thought I could answer your questions and you could walk back out of my life.”

Pressure built up behind my eyes, an ache pulsing through my head. “News flash. I’m not in your life. I haven’t been since you walked out of mine.”

Damn him for being even sexier than I remembered, and for making my heart race with a look, and for making me wish for the one thing that could bring me to my knees.

No way. Never again. “I’ve moved on.”

Logan turned, his head tilted slightly. “Have you?”

He crossed the room and had me in his arms. His lips caught mine, and my body responded like I’d just found water in the desert. I clutched the back of his hair, and he held me so tight against him I could barely breathe. Our tongues wrestled urgently—hungry, angry, hurt, and desperate. He slid one hand down my back, pressing my hips to his. His rock hard erection had my leg wrapping around his, every part of me aching to be even closer.

Closer to the one man who destroyed me without ever looking back.

I shoved him, stumbling away from the sanctuary of his arms. Reality settled onto my shoulders like a boulder. What in the hell was I doing?

Slamming my laptop shut, I swiped the recorder into my bag. I needed to escape before I went to pieces in front of him.

“Anna, wait.”

He reached for me, and I slapped him so hard the sound made me freeze. I opened my mouth to apologize, but no words came out.

His hair was mussed, his shirt disheveled, and that sexy smile was replaced by…hunger and something else…regret? “I deserve that.”

“I…You…” I jammed the computer in my bag and took a breath before facing him again. “Don’t ever touch me again.”

A deep sound rumbled in his chest, like he was…growling?

“I had no right to kiss you, I know that. But hearing you say you moved on—I panicked.”

Crossing my arms, I let out a frustrated groan. “Do you often make out with women when you get upset?”

His gaze held mine, his expression stoic. “Never.”

“So why me?” My head pounded in time with my heart.

“Can we sit?”

I shook my head. “Not a good idea.”

He sighed. “I swear I won’t touch you without your consent.”

“You’ll never have it.”

He put his hands up in surrender. “All I’m asking for is your time.”

I kept my things in my hands, ready for a quick getaway, but I followed him to the sofa and sat on the opposite end from him. My entire body was hot and achy. Turned on. Bastard.

He stared at his shoes. “You never should have come back to Reno.”

“And you never should have told me you loved me and then vanished from my life.”

He nodded without making eye contact. “I know you won’t believe me, but I did it for you.”

“Enough.” I rolled my eyes and would’ve smacked him with my laptop if I wasn’t worried his hard head would break my computer. “Please don’t make me throw up.”

He finally glanced my way, the corner of his mouth quirked up into a crooked smile. “God, I’ve missed you.”

Modern Romance: An Investigation
By and Read: Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg

Blurb:
A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s most popular and sharpest comedic voices

At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!” “My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who’s Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?”

But the transformation of our romantic lives can’t be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighborhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate.

For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before.

In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.
