Book Review: Dark Alpha's Embrace by Donna Grant

Dark Alpha's Embrace
(Reaper Series, #2)
by Donna Grant

Blurb:
An exclusive new series from New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant!

There's no escaping a Reaper. I'm an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I'm coming for you...
I'm a warrior. My unbreakable determination, my backbone of steel define me. As a Reaper who does Death's bidding, weakness is a word I don't understand. Until a stunning librarian stirs emotions deep within me I've never felt before. Her soft curves blunt the sharp edges of my soul, crushing my defenses - yet make me stronger. But underneath those wide eyes and fierce femininity, she has a weapon, one she won't hesitate to use. And when the Dark begin their deadly descent, we'll need each other's love and protection...or risk fracturing apart.

Viviana's Review:

Book 2 in the Reaper Series, Donna continues to spin her web of captivating her readers and creating characters that are filled with mystery and intrigue.

Picking up where Dark Alpha’s Claim (bk #1) left off we find the Reapers continuing their mission and along the way having to learn to deal with some new circumstances/issues they never thought possible.

The Reapers, made up of both Dark and Light Fae work together in this team assembled by Death.  As a spinoff series from The Dark Kings, the thought of Darks and Light being team members isn’t something that was thought to be believed.  Apparently Death has ways about her.

Speaking of The Dark Kings Series, both series intertwine and overlap a bit - something readers may wish to consider but not an issue if you haven’t read the Dark series.

Ah yes, Death.  Love how Ms. Donna creates the air of mystery and then adds a bunch of things that readers must get through in order to find out.  Donna’s gift with words comes to light as she keeps her readers entranced and coming back for more.

Overall a great continuation, and I cannot wait until the next book.

Book Review: Tackling The Tight End by Tara Lain

Tackling The Tight End
(Long Pass Chronicles Series, #3)
By Tara Lain

Blurb:
Everyone wants the best for SCU student and tight end, Raven Nez—and they know exactly what that is. Enter the NFL draft, become a big football hero, promote his tribe’s casino, and make a lot of money to help people on the reservation. Just one problem. Raven really wants to work with gay kids, and while he loves his tribe and likes football, his visions for the future don’t mesh with theirs. Then the casino board hires a talented student filmmaker to create ads for the tribal business and asks Raven to work with him. But the filmmaker is Dennis Hascomb, a guy with so much to hide and a life so ugly it’s beyond Raven’s understanding. Still he’s drawn to Dennis's pain and incredible ability to survive. Captivated by Raven’s stories of the two-spirited and by the amazing joy of finally having a friend, Dennis knows he has to break free from everything he’s ever been taught was good—but that’s a struggle that could kill him and Raven, too. Is there a chance for “the great red hope” and the “whitest guy on earth”? A future for the serpent and the raven?

Viviana's Review:

The third installment in the Long Pass Chronicles Series, i was interested to see how Tara, the author, would portray Dennis as a hero since in previous books he’s been the “bad guy”.  As the saying goes “Not everything is as it seems”.

I loved the first two books in the series for various different reasons.  The characters, their stories, the obstacles they each had to overcome to be their true selves… these are just some of the main ones.  With Tackling the Tight End I find myself liking the book a lot more than loving it.  The writing is still strong, and I enjoyed the diversity as well.

There was just something - maybe it was Dennis’ home situation that was just way too much; that he went along with it as long as he did; his lack of sharing/providing information about his past/home life that could have proven helpful… I can’t pinpoint it exactly.

Overall a really good read that moves the series along.  I’m extremely happy Tara includes diverse characters in her stories adding a deeper level of realism to heartfelt stories.

Audio Book Review: Easy Melody by Kristen Proby

Easy Melody (Boudreaux #3)
by Kristen Proby
Narrators: Rachel Fulginiti and Sebastian York

Blurb:
Callie Mills never intended to return to New Orleans and the life she left behind more than a decade ago. There was no need to open old wounds when she had the life she’d worked hard for in Denver. But when she’s fired from her awesome job in Colorado and her father dies, she has no choice but to return home to run the derelict bar left to her in the heart of the French Quarter. Callie must not only face bad memories but turn The Odyssey into something she can be proud of.

And who better to help bring in crowds of people than Declan Boudreaux?

Declan is a sought-after musician who knows he’s good at what he does and loves doing it. Known to pack the house, he also loves women and doesn’t expect to be knocked back a step by the beautiful new owner of The Odyssey. Callie is sharp, gorgeous and funny, and makes him yearn for something he never has before… Commitment.

But when Callie’s able to turn the business around with renovations, making it one of the hottest bars in the Quarter, will she sell out and leave her past behind once and for all, or will Declan be able to convince her that’s she’s where she needed to be all along…in his arms.

Viviana's Review:

Book 3 in the Boudreaux series was a great, simple, and easy read.  It flowed great, both in the storytelling and characters.  Declan has always intrigued me as the sarcastic, yet quiet and easygoing brother of the Boudreaux family.  Loved that he did his own thing and not what others expected of him.  That he was a sexy musician didn’t hurt, either...lol.

Callie is a no holds barred business owner who inherited the local bar from her father and needs to decide what to do with it.

The chemistry between Callie and Declan is instant and hot and heavy.  However, as Declan is not ready to commit Callie isn’t willing to be just another fling.  The decision to be friends is made, and thus a budding relationship begins.

I loved the “being friends” and getting to know each other.  Callie has many reservations but I loved that she knew her value and wasn’t willing to let things be “in hopes” things would change.  I also loved that the both of them had several things in common yet had their own things going on, able to support one another but be on their own.

Narrators - both continue to do a fabulous job with the characters.  They each bring their own unique talents to the story enhancing the reader’s experiences.

Overall, a great continuation of the series and I cannot wait for the next book!

 Viviana's Review:

As a fan of both Laura and this series I was happy to learn we were getting a novella to give us a little more as the series had come to an end.  Laura was also awesome in letting the readers vote on who would be the couple.  Votes were in, and we get to see Nick’s and Becca’s extended happy ending.

Originally, I thought this would be a very short novella of their wedding - catch the readers up a little on what had been going on a few months after the end of the last book.  Nope.  Not Ms. Laura Kaye.  Though a novella we get an entire story filled with more suspense, suspects, and a moment or two of wanting to chat with Laura and say “hey - don’t you think they have been through enough?”

With that said, for a tiny bit there it does feel like a bit much…  This novella is filled with a lot of stuff from the mystery of “who”, to sex scenes which to me… felt again a tad bit too much.  Didn’t need to be fillers as the story was meant as an add on, a bonus one might say!  I found myself skimming a bit.  However, once we got back to the story it flows right back.

Overall a quick read readers will enjoy and feel they got their HEA ending.

Book Review: Love in the Light by Laura Kaye

Love in the Light
(Hearts in Darkness Series,  #2)
by Laura Kaye

Blurb:
Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

Viviana's Review:

The highly anticipated, the OMG I can’t believe it’s finally here” continuation of the “Hearts in Darkness” series.  Readers love the first novella in the series “Hearts in Darkness” for not only the brilliant writing but the depth of emotions it made the reader feel.  Each character had their own unique strength and vulnerability and NO ONE ever looked at an elevator the same again.  Thank you Laura Kaye!

I will admit to being a tad bit worried about “Love in the Light”.  Let’s be honest, many times we have extremely high expectations or believe they should be a certain way with characters we love.  Authors are unique creatures who love what they do and many love to please their fans and write that additional scene or give us a glimpse of what’s going on with the characters in another book, and it’s great.  It works.  Sometimes authors force it, and the results are not so great.  I’m extremely happy that “Love in the Light” was one of those instances that it was a great read.  Though readers have been asking for this for years  - Laura took her time for various reasons, and the result is a story that is true to the characters and one that readers still enjoy.

Wouldn’t necessarily say this could be read as a standalone, but I think if you happen to pick this up first you definitely will want to read book 1.

Makenna and Caden are still going strong 2 months after meeting and falling for each other.  Like with any relationship next steps come into play and when your past is still haunting you  - doubt isn’t your friend.

“Love in the Light” was a great read and one that illustrates Laura’s talent for storytelling.  Readers will not be disappointed - in fact I am sure they will be requesting the third installment (hint hint) LOL.

Check out this fantastic excerpt from AFTER THE STORM!

“I didn’t know I was pregnant until I woke up from the accident.” Ginny’s voice was an impassioned whisper. “I found out two things that changed my life in that moment. I found out that my best friend was gone and that I was pregnant. And I prayed so hard that I hadn’t lost all of Jacob forever.”
Forever. That’s what she was looking at. She was looking at an entire lifetime of being a mother without a son. She loved her daughters dearly, but she would mourn Jacob forever. And this selfish girl was equating her pain as though they were the same. As though one night of spreading her legs gave her the right to mourn him.

“I think you woke up and realized you had two options. Take care of that baby alone or worm your way into Jacob’s family and his money.”

“I never cared about the money.”

Celeste wasn’t going to listen to that tripe. “Of course you did. Not enough to keep your legs closed. You say you loved Jacob but how long did you wait before you hopped into bed with that Murphy boy? Did you even break it off with my brother-in-law? How many men do you need on your string?”
“I’ve never slept with Logan, but I will admit that I’m in love with him. I love him in a way I never loved Jacob. Jacob was my best friend, but I know now that he wasn’t my soul mate. I pray with everything I am that this is his child, that we receive a miracle because I don’t want him to be lost forever, but I won’t hide what I feel for Logan and I won’t pretend it’s nasty. Not even to placate you, Celeste. I want to make things right between us and that means apologizing to you. Celeste, I’m so sorry I hurt you. I never meant to. I should have been braver. I should have been stronger, but I woke up and the world had crashed around me and I wanted the love you could give me. That all of you could give me. I’m sorry that it brought you so much pain.”

Something about the way she was standing there enraged Celeste. How could she stand there looking so innocent? How could she say exactly the right things to garner empathy? Celeste didn’t want to empathize. She wanted to fight and tear up things and destroy the world around her because it seemed so damn intent on destroying her. She wanted to burn it all down.

She didn’t feel her hand snap back, didn’t quite understand what she was doing. The world seemed tinged in red at the corners as though rage now filtered her vision. And it slowed everything down. In horror she realized she was going to strike Ginny Moreno. Her hand was going to bring justice her words never could.

And then it slapped against flesh. A strong hand circled her wrist and Travis stared down at her like he had no idea who she was.

Assassin's Honor (The Order of the Sicari Book 1) by Monica Burns

Only love can save a telekinetic assassin's honor in a world where Ancient Rome never fell. Passion abounds in this award-winning series.

The Roman Empire never collapsed for Ares DeLuca and other Sicari. Ares comes from an ancient bloodline of telekinetic assassins who have lived in the shadows for two millennia. The Sicari are honor bound to kill only in the name of justice, but Ares broke the Order’s code and used his sword for revenge. Love cost him dearly once before, and he’s not willing to pay the price again. At least not until hot, sweet, delectable Emma enters his world. Not only does she have the ability to save an ancient empire’s collapse, she holds the key to a valuable Sicari relic and quite likely the key to his heart.

Archeologist Emma Zale sees the past when she touches ancient relics. It’s how she uncovered evidence of an ancient order of assassins—the Sicari. When a sinfully dark stranger shows up on her Chicago doorstep, he drags her into a world where ancient Rome still rules, and telekinesis and empaths are the norm. But someone wants her dead, and her only hope of survival is an assassin who’s every bit as dangerous to her body as he is to her heart.

Ancient Rome Collides with Present-Day Chicago and Only Love Can Save an Empire’s Collapse and Ensure Another’s Downfall

This award-winning series (reissued for the first time) starts off with a bang with an exciting combination of romance, suspense, sexy paranormal assassin heroes, and extraordinary world-building.

The Undoing (Call of Crows, #2) by Shelly Laurenston

The Undoing (Call of Crows, #2)A risk worth taking…
No one would ever accuse Jace Berisha of having an easy life—considering her husband…you know…killed her. But that was then! Now she fights for mighty Viking gods with the spectacular and vicious Crows.
But things are turning very bad, very quickly because a vengeful, ancient goddess has come into the world with just one thing on her mind—ending it. And the only way they can hope to stop her is if the Crows join forces with their one-time enemies, the Protectors. A Viking Clan created to do nothing but kill every Crow they see.
Thankfully, Protector Ski Eriksen is a peace loving kind of guy. Because the woman he is desperately trying to get close to is the beautiful and not-very-chatty Jace. Battling Nordic clans? Unkillable goddesses? Jace’s mean-spirited dog? None of these things would ever get in the way of a true Viking!
