Author Interview (Blog Tour): "Broken Blade" by J.C. Daniels

Hi JC!! Welcome to Enchantress of Books! I’m so excited you’re hanging out with us today!

Thanks for having me.

JC, tell us about the Colbana Files Series.

In a nutshell?  She’s a smartass with a sword.

LOL! I like her already!! Where did you find your inspiration for this series?

That would be hard to say… ideas for stories just sort of come to me.  The first story I wrote was a short story, for Tor.com, A Stroke of Dumb Luck, and I wrote that one because I wanted to try something that was more urban fantasy without any romance to it—it was a really short, short story so there wasn’t room for romance.  I wanted to expand on it, but I didn’t know how.  I played with it for a couple of years and then one day—BAM—it was like a lightning strike.  Kit, and company, was pretty much fully formed in my head.

Kit is a half breed, assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire, basically a jack of all trades. What else can you tell us about her?

She’s weaker than most of those around her.  She has to rely on her wits to make it.  Her stubbornness keeps her going, more than anything else.

How has Kit developed/grown from “Blade Song (book 1)” to where she is now in “Broken Blade (book 3)”?

That’s a tricky question.  If people haven’t read Night Blade, the second book, they aren’t going to understand that Kit starts out book 3 pretty much broken.  Only Kit was never really whole to begin with. She didn’t entirely understand that, though.  She’ll start to realize that as the series go on and learn how to piece herself together and make herself stronger.  In book 3, she starts piecing herself together from the ground up.

What can you tell us about Kit’s and Damon’s relationship?

A lot.  But I won’t.  Not yet.

Oh you're such a tease! But we love you so you're forgiven! What is it about this genre that you enjoy so much as a reader? And as a writer, what about this genre made you want to write it in the first place?

I love the way the worlds change from one book to the next.  And the very thing I love about the genre is the reason I wanted to take a shot at writing it.

Is there anything you’d like to tell your readers about what’s coming next in the series?

I hate to give away secrets… but I’m working on book 4 and playing with an idea for a short story—a prequel of sorts about how Kit got into the investigative work and how she met her friend, Justin.

Oh, that sounds awesome!! Can't wait!! Thank you so much for stopping by hanging out with us!!

And THANK YOU for hanging out w/ J.C. and me today. If you haven't read the series or this installment, scroll below to read the book's blurb and links where you can find the book. Also, check out the exclusive excerpt and don't forget to enter the awesome giveaway!!!

Broken Blade (Colbana Files #3)
By
 J.C. Daniels

Blurb:

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken. She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn’t taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic...one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.

If she survives the job, she won’t be the same...and neither will those closest to her.

Excerpt

“I don’t like that woman, Damon. I don’t like her at all.”

A muscle in his jaw pulsed. “She’s a bitch, but the clan doesn't exactly give out phone numbers just because a human girl calls up looking for one.”

“And what about when your girlfriend calls to talk to you after a fight?” I don’t know if I’d meant to talk about that or not. But the words ripped out of me and…and they were just there. Thrown out like a sucker-punch and now they hung between us like an ugly, red stain.

Silence struck, heavy and weighted, crackling with more tension that I could stand.
Damon came off the couch in a smooth, controlled motion, his eyes locked on my face and everything inside him seemed…quiet.

Too quiet. All of that caged, restless energy was sucked down and he just stared at me, unblinking. It was damned unnerving.

Seconds ticked by and finally, he said softly, “What did you just say?”

About the Author
J.C. Daniels is the alter ego of author Shiloh Walker and was created basically because Shiloh writes like a hyperactive bunny and an intervention was necessary.  J.C. is the intervention.  The name… J.C. Daniels is a play off of the three people who pretty much run Shiloh’s life.

J.C./Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. She fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more…ah…serious works of fiction. She loves reading and writing just about every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest.  She writes urban fantasy, romantic suspense and paranormal romance, among other things.

  4. This is a series I've been meaning to pick up. I've read several of her other books (as Shiloh Walker) and loved them. The Missing is the first book I ever read by her and it just knocked my socks off. Thanks for sharing this interview. Its was a lot of fun. :)
