Book Review: His Mistress by Monica Burns

His Mistress
(Self-Made Men Series, Bk #1)
By Monica Burns

As a solicitor seeking justice for victims of violence, Tobias Lynsted must maintain control at all times while working in the seedy underworld of London’s East End. The darkness of his world creates a need for the intimacy and release he can only find in the forbidden pleasure of submission. The kind of pleasure where a powerful man has the freedom to let go of his control for a few sweet moments of oblivion. But when a blackmail scheme forces him to marry, the last thing he expects in a wife is a woman who will satisfy the darker side of his nature.

Lady Jane Grisham has no desire to marry, but choosing marriage over a life of destitution is an easy choice to make. Although Jane knows love is for the foolish, Tobias awakens her most wicked and darkest of desires. In the sinful world of domination and submission, Jane uses her blossoming skills to make Tobias surrender not only his body but his secrets. But she quickly discovers that the true test of her strength is trusting Tobias with her heart.

Viviana's Review:

Monica Burns has a way with keeping things classy yet steamy!! She has an incredible ability to draw you into the world she has created. "His Mistress" is a beautiful combination of a historical romance and BDSM. If you have never read a BDSM genre and really enjoy historical romance, this is definitely a great intro to the BDSM genre.

"His Mistress" is the first installment in the "Self-Made Men" series and I can't wait to read more! I couldn't put this down. Jane is smart and independent and that combination during that time frame isn't a good. She fights society's definition of what is deemed as 'proper' and 'her place'. She's blindsided by her own father by marrying her off in order to make his new wife happy. She doesn't whine or does the "why me" speech. Nope! She takes matters into her own hands and the fun begins!

Tobias is oh so yummy! He's completely alpha but without being overbearing or being an ass! He respects Jane and is intrigued by her independance. He believes what he likes in the bedroom is something that is not for everyone and while he may be right, he has no idea how to approach the matter with his new wife nor does he believe she would be interested in trying something new.

Overall a fabulous reads that leaves you wanting more! Cannot wait for the second installment in the series!

Rating: 4.5 Stars - I LOVED IT Very Much!

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the Author, Monica Burns in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Blood Wolf Dawning (Bloodrunners, #7) by Rhyannon Byrd

Blood Wolf Dawning (Bloodrunners, #7)If this was what falling for someone did to a person—what craving them felt like—then Sayre Murphy wanted no part of it…
Ever. She might be young and inexperienced, but she was a woman. And she had finally had enough! Cian Hennessey might be the most magnificent, infuriating, arrogant male she had ever known. But the tall Bloodrunner treated her as if she were nothing more than a child, making it painfully clear that despite whatever connection they shared, he'd never see her as an adult female. After disappearing from her life for five years, the werewolf was back, claiming that she was in serious danger and must drop everything to go with him immediately.
Cian was as deadly as he was beautiful. But the young witch knew he would never cause her physical harm. The safety of her heart, however, was a different matter.

Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire (Love at Stake, #16) by Kerrelyn Sparks

Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire (Love at Stake, #16)
New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks delivers the exciting conclusion in the Love at Stake series, where a Marine-turned-vampire finds love with the shifter princess forbidden to him...
Russell wakes from a coma to find he's become a vampire. Now he has a thirst for revenge. Determined to hunt down the master vampire who turned him, he's used to working alone . . . until he meets Jia. She is after the same vampire for murdering her parents and insists she can help Russell on this mission. Reluctantly, he agrees, and sets up some ground rules:
Rule #1: Their partnership is strictly business. If he holds her a little too close . . . if she looks at him with those exotic eyes . . . well, that has to stop.
Rule #2: He's in charge. Jia isn't used to taking orders and questions every move he makes. So he stops her the only way he knows how.
Rule #3: Don't fall in love. But the kiss that was supposed to quiet her awakens something else in him . . . something forbidden. Because Jia is engaged. To someone else.

Hot Blooded (Dark Kings, #4) by Donna Grant

Hot Blooded (Dark Kings, #4)The Dark Kings soldier on in their fight to preserve their dragon magic. But eternal doom is always close behind…
His name is Laith. To most, he’s known as the owner of a local pub near Dreagan. But little do his patrons know that beneath his handsome, charming exterior Laith has the heart and soul of a Dragon King—one who wields control by keeping his friends close and his enemies, just across the border, closer. Until a mysterious stranger enters the picture, and sets his whole world off course.
Iona is a woman with a mission: To learn the truth about her dead father. She’s returned to Scotland only to learn that she’s part of an ancient pact with Dreagan—one that will threaten the fragile peace with the Dragon Kings. Gorgeous, sly Iona isn’t like anyone Laith has ever met before...and she harbors a secret that others would kill to possess. Will she complete him—or destroy him? Passion always comes with a price.

Low Midnight (Kitty Norville, #13) by Carrie Vaughn

Low Midnight (Kitty Norville, #13)
Low Midnight spins out of the series on the wave of popularity surrounding Kitty's most popular supporting character, Cormac Bennett, a two-minded assassin of the paranormal who specializes in killing lycanthropes.
In his first solo adventure, Cormac, struggling with a foreign consciousness trapped inside him, investigates a century-old crime in a Colorado mining town which could be the key to translating a mysterious coded diary… a tome with secrets that could shatter Kitty's world and all who inhabit it.
With a framing sequence that features Kitty Norville herself, Low Midnight not only pushes the Kitty saga forward, but also illuminates Cormac's past and lays the groundwork for Kitty's future.

Shoot for the Moon (Black River Pack, #2) by Rochelle Paige

Shoot for the Moon (Black River Pack #2)
Eliza Reve knows that her ability to dream of future events sets her apart from others. Her gift became a curse when she wasn't able to save her mother or the alpha's son and she found herself exiled - a lone wolf. When she joins the Black River Pack, Eliza vows never to reveal her talent to anyone. Not even the man who has walked in her dreams for years.
Spencer Tate is her mate, but her visions have told her that he will renounce her. When he doesn't recognize her as his mate, she agrees to the no-strings-attached affair he offers because she thinks it's the most she can hope for. Although her heart breaks as she falls deeper in love with him, she wants to spend as many days with Spencer as possible before he kicks her out of his life.
When Spencer finally comes to his senses, he has his work cut out for him to convince Eliza that he wants her forever. When another she-wolf insists she's his mate instead, things get even more complicated. But Spencer isn't the alpha's second and enforcer because he isn't willing to fight for what's his, and he refuses to settle for anything less than Eliza as his marked and claimed mate.
This is book two in the Black River Pack series. Each novella will feature a different couple.

2014 Audio Book Challenge Wrap Up

This is the second year The Book Nympho and Hot Listens team up to create the Audio Book Challenge and its the second year that I have participated. I LOVE audio books and believe them to be a great resources to readers and a great asset to authors. I've listened to a lot of audio books this year and some were re-reads which I LOVED doing as the first time around, I devoured the books that some of those small but important details didn't stick. I'm going to share with you my favorite ones in Audio book and the why!

Favorite Series:

This year, my all time favorite Audio Book series is a tie between The Mageri Series and The Seven Series by Dannika Dark! The narrator, Nicole Poole, does a great job of giving life to each of the character and providing unique tones, accents, personalities, etc. These two series in audio were a re-read for me and loved it! I realized small "bread crumbs" that Dannika includes but missed during the first pass of reading since I was so engrossed in the story!

Another great audio book series is Darynda Jones's "Charlie Davidson" Series! Lorelei King is the narrator for this series and she freaking rocks!! Her narration brings Darynda's world and characters to life!!

New to me series and LOVED IT!

This was the first time I "read" a book by Joanna Wylde and WOW! Talk about falling in love! While REAPER'S STAND is the fourth in the series, I wasn't lost nor did I feel like I was missing something. Instead it made me want to read the previous books!

This audio book had two narrators - one female and one male but they took turns narrating based on who's POV the chapter. At first I was a tad bit disappointed BUT it worked for this book and it made complete sense based on how the book was written.

While both narrators did a great job, Sean Crisden made the audio book for me. He captured Reese's character perfectly! I so looked up what other books he has narratored and added them to my TBR list. Turns out, a few were already on the list. :)

Can't wait to start the new year as there are so many more books to listen to!!
Have you found a new series via audio that you fell in love with?

Temp Me Tuesday with Mad Hatter Reads 12/23/2014

Tempt Me Tuesday

Hi Everyone!!! Look at what Mad Hatter has to show us.

Merry Christmas everyone!!! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday! But with the holiday, you may have some travel time or just some extra time to enjoy a new book. So just in time, here are some new temptations just for you!

Journey Through the Mirror by T.R. Williams
Rising World Triology, #2
Journey Through the Mirror: Book Two of the Rising World TrilogyFollowing Journey Into the Flame; a spiritual adventure of the first order; (New York Times bestselling author Felix Palma) comes the second part in a post-apocalyptic trilogy about a set of ancient books that hold the key to humanity’s survival.
In 2030, after the Great Disruption brought humanity to the brink of a second dark age, the Chronicles of Satraya were discovered, restoring hope in the world. But the secret powers in their pages remained largely unknown.
There were some, however, who understood them. The Reges Hominum, the Kings of Men, a clandestine group influencing history from the shadows, sought to use their hidden gifts to regain world control. But their plans were foiled by an unlikely group: Alain Perrot, an eccentric old man and former member of the Council of Satraya; Special Agent Valerie Perrot, his daughter; and Logan Ford, a young painter who discovered he was the son of one of the Chronicles; original finders, long since murdered in an effort to protect them.
Soon, seemingly unrelated global events pull Logan and his allies into another contest with those enemies determined to bring a rising world back down. The earth’s still-recovering energy supply is put at risk. Illnesses spread. Earthquakes without epicenters shatter the land. And the only things holding the world together are the Chronicles, connected to a series of scattered, hidden mirrors around the globe.
With T.R. Williams’s trademark excitement, mystery, magic, and deep wisdom, the second book in the Rising World trilogy ensures that you will never look at your reflection the same way again.

Marked by Rebecca ZanettiDark Protectors, #7
Marked (Dark Protectors, #7)Janie Kayrs has known Zane almost her whole life. He was her friend in the dream world. She trusted him. But that was before he kidnapped her, spiriting her away to an isolated cabin to learn what her dreams never told her. Like how dangerous he looks. How he got on the wrong side of the negotiating table. And how much sexier he is in real life…
Zane is a battle-hardened warrior, used to command and solitude. But Janie has drawn him from the minute they met. His need for her could destroy everything he’s worked for, but the risk is too sweet not to take it. They call her the Chosen One. But when it comes down to the questions of peace or war, life or death, safety or passion, it will be Janie who makes the choice.

My Protector by Alanea Alder
My ProtectorGavriel Ambrosios has been dreaming of his accident prone mate for weeks. Now that he is nearing the apex of his vampiric transition, she has made her way to Lycaonia, just when he is at his most dangerous.
Elizabeth Monroe was planning on staying in Lycaonia while humans forgot about the swan dive she took out of her boss’s office window. Little did she know that this short side trip was about to become permanent. Gavriel is the mate she has always dreamed of. Even as he sweeps her off her feet his need to protect her has him pushing her away. She’s both concerned with and drawn to his darker nature, but is determined to see him through his transition.
In the shadows their enemy has targeted Gavriel when they know he is at his most vulnerable. They creep ever closer to the Alpha estate putting the men on high alert.
But as the days get shorter and the nights get longer Elizabeth begins to wonder, which is the bigger threat? The enemy or her mate?

The Unseelie King by Heather Killough-WaldenThe Kings, #6
The Unseelie King (The Kings series, bk #6)Lord Caliban, the Leanan King, the Unholy King – the Unseelie.
“The doors of his castle opened before him of their own accord. In the Unseelie Kingdom, every soul recognized his, as an animal sensing an oncoming earthquake or the rumble of a mighty storm. Ears perked and stone listened, and doors opened to make way. The sound of boots on stone echoed in the vast emptiness of the palace vast, sending shockwaves of preparation through the realm’s inhabitants. There was silence there, in those waiting eyes and those rapid beating hearts. But there was music as well. If it had been audible to a mortal, it would have sounded foreboding, beautiful but deadly. It was the haunting melody that welcomed a haunted sovereign to his solitary world and its dark and lonesome throne.”
For thousands of years, two realms of unspeakable magic and mystery have existed in peace side by side. One is a land of light and possibility. The other is drawn in the stark lines of wickedness and seeped in the unbearable beauty that comes with it. The first is ruled by the Seelie King. The other is ruled by Caliban.
The Unseelie King is the sixth book in Heather Killough-Walden’s acclaimed paranormal romance series, The Kings. Within its pages, a dark lord finds hope in a beautiful, powerful soul, its tempting and forbidden magic, and a fierce and willful love that he will have to fight as never before to claim as his own.

Transcendent by Lesley LivingstonStarling, #3
Transcendent (Starling, #3)LOVE CONQUERS
On a storm-swept terrace high above the streets of Manhattan, Mason Starling holds the fate of the world in her hands as her beloved Fennrys lies bleeding at her feet, his life hanging in the balance. The ancient Norse prophecy of Ragnarok stands poised on the knife edge of fulfillment. Mason’s transformation into a Valkyrie—a chooser of the slain and the one who will ultimately bring about the end of the world—is complete. Still, she remains determined to thwart her father’s apocalyptic desires. Whatever is to come, it won’t happen because of what the prophecy foretold, or what Gunnar Starling has planned, or what the fates have already decided. What happens next will be up to Mason and the Fennrys Wolf. The world had better hope they haven’t reached the limits of what their souls and swords can survive.
Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, and set in the same universe as Lesley Livingston’s much-loved WONDROUS STRANGE trilogy, with roots in Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, and Celtic myths and legends, this thrilling conclusion to the acclaimed Starling trilogy is filled to the hilt with sweeping adventure and soaring romance.

Release Day Blitz: The Unseelie King by Heather Killough-Walden

The Unseelie King
(The Kings Series, Book #6)
By Heather Killough-Walden

For thousands of years, two realms of unspeakable magic and mystery have existed in peace side by side. One is a land of light, of kindness, of dreams, and of color. The other is rendered in the gray lines of wickedness and seeped in the unbearable beauty of all that is forbidden. The first is ruled by the Seelie King. The other is ruled by Caliban… The Unholy.

Minerva Trystaine has always been the quiet twin, bullied by reality’s fierceness into a life of solitary sensitivity. What she witnesses, she feels. Living in a world that breeds one misfortune after another, she has had no choice but to sequester herself from outgoing life and any hope it might have otherwise offered her. She hides in her music, her hopes and dreams silent but for the harmony she gives them upon rare occasion, allowing them to be heard in perfect pitch by the rest of the world.

But when Minerva’s sister, Selene, is forced into a fantastical  realm of supernatural magic and mystery and taken as queen of the seelie kingdom, the twins are reunited with a world they can scarcely remember – but could never forget. They are Wishers. Born of furious magic and fueled by the need for justice, Wishers are the most feared magic users in the fae realms. For this reason, they were all but annihilated thousands of years ago. Minerva and her sister are the last of a slaughtered breed.

Just as Selene accepts her place on the seelie throne, Minerva struggles to come to grips with her changed world. But as she faces off with her lost-and-found identity, and with the unbelievable power swimming through her veins, she realizes she must also contend with the fact that Wishers are no more safe in this day and age than they were millennia ago. Someone wants her dead.

And the one man she should probably fear most, the one fae lord more dangerous than any other, the notorious and cruel Leanan King – just happens to be the only man in all the realms who can protect her.
The Unseelie King is the sixth book in Heather Killough-Walden’s acclaimed paranormal romance series, The Kings. Within its pages, a dark lord finds long lost hope in a beautiful, powerful soul, a lost spirit finds faith in tempting and forbidden magic, and a fierce and willful love finds the unbelievable strength to do what must be done to survive against overwhelming odds.
