Book Review (Audio): Lord's Fall (The Elder Races, #5) by Thea Harrison

Lord's Fall
(The Elder Races, bk #5)
By Thea Harrison

Narrator: Sophie Eastlake

Synopsis:
Before she met Dragos, half-human half-wyr Pia Giovanni was alone and on the run. Now, she's mated, pregnant and heading south to repair the Wyr's frayed relationship with the Elves. Being separated from Dragos is painful, but for the good of the Wyr demesne they need to figure out how to be partners, in more places than just the bedroom. In New York to preside over the Sentinel Games, Dragos is worried about his mate, but knows that finding two replacement sentinels is essential to show the rest of the Elder Races just how strong and brutal the Wyr demesne can be. But as the games heat up, Pia's negotiations with the Elves take a turn for the dangerous, straining her bond with Dragos and threatening everything they hold dear.

Viviana's Review:
I love this series! I have to start by telling you that. I fell in LOVE w/ Dragos (100% Hot, Alpha Male, who wouldn't?) in "Dragon Bound" which also is the first book in the Elder Races series. This series is an auto buy for me. I have 'read' the entire series via audio books and I'll let you know my thoughts on the narrator later. Everyone (those within my book world) always raved about all the books in the series, however, they were not as "enthused' with "Lord's Fall". This made me ponder the reasons. Its book 5 in the series, though it does focus on Dragos and Pia so its almost like a sequal to "Dragon Bound". I liked Pia! When I shared that I had begun to listen to "Lord's Fall", I heard some of the following "stick with it", "it got better after the halfway mark", "Dragos is still Sexy as hell!" ( I did smile at that one!) and again made me wonder...

Revelations of the Souls Tour - Guest Post: J.L. Vallance

I'm extremely happy to have J.L. Vallance

Linux, THE Cruciatum

Cruciatum (Torture)--A class of Daemonium that tortures their human victims, feeding off of their pain.
Glowing royal blue reptilian eyes strike fear in his victims moments before his touch, his Percutio, has them writhing in agonizing pain. With the slightest of caresses, he turns the gesture of a lover, into the weapon of a fiending manic. And for what? For a few minutes of pleasure--a sliver of time to feel human? Isn’t that laughable? Torture and kill humans, just for a few precious minutes to feel like them. Ha, Lucifer is a sick and twisted bastard.

Guest Post: Playing the Maestro by Aubrie Dionne

I'd like to welcome Author Aubrie Dionne to Enchantress of Books!

Why I Chose the Flute

Like Melody in Playing the Maestro, I used to pretend to play flute on my toothbrush as a kid. I’d hold it sideways, just like a flute, and blow on top of the brush. I believe the very first time I heard flute was the introduction to the movie The Last Unicorn.
You can see it on You Tube here:

Book Review: Venetian Love Knots by Normandie Alleman

Venetian Love Knots
By Normandie Alleman

Synopsis:

In Venice, Allison Fox will find love in the arms of two men. Her past collides with her future in a battle for her heart. Which one will win?

Travelling to Venice to be the maid of honour in her best friend’s wedding sounds like a great vacation, and a romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day. But when Allison Fox discovers who the best man is, she is torn between duty and self-preservation.

It has taken Allison four years to put her tumultuous relationship with the rodeo cowboy behind her. A violent incident ripped them apart. Now Allison must find a way to face her past and find closure with her old flame. But will she be able to put the past behind her?

Cole is the Texas cowboy has never got over his love for Allison. But when he declares his love for her after all this time, is she strong enough to walk away from the intense passion they share?

For years Nico, a handsome Italian, was committed to nothing but his work. Nico never expected he would meet an American beauty who would awaken in him a desire to love again. Once he finds her, Nico vows to never let Allison go.

It will be a Valentine’s Day to remember, but who will win Allison’s heart?

Viviana's Review:
The author provides this warning: Reader Advisory: This novella contains bondage, spanking, M/F/M menage, and light humiliation play.

I was okay with it all, though wondered about the "light humiliation play". Did the warning stand true? I'm glad when authors provide such advisory since I believe its important to let readers know what they are purchasing. Was there bondage? Yes, Allison was tied up. Was there spanking? Yes, Allison was spanked. There were two men so the M/F/M menage is true. And as far as the light humiliation play... oh yeah. More than slight actually. The worst part - Allison does it to herself! Are there women like that in real life? Meek, weak, with self doubt, naive, etc.? Yes! Do I want to read them or rather about them? No!

Allison's thoughts, emotions and behavior were too erratic. She hates Cole, She loves Cole. She hates Cole, Oh Hi Nico. She Loves Cole, Sorry Nico, Cole's an asshole, oh yeah I want to have sex with you Cole... well you all get the idea. If she would have put up a slight fight against Cole's "charm" I would have enjoyed this novella more.

I kept waiting for Cole to "redeem" himself. He was an asshole from the beginning of the story (so obviously, that you truly had to wonder why the hell Allison thought he was worthy of her emotions for him) and he was an asshole throughout the entire story. I'm not going to say "love" because it was more about LUST then love. Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with reading about lust but not when its masked as love.

Nico was sweet and extremely naive. Or perhaps he is the knight in shining armor! I hope so for Allison's sake!

The sex -  it was steamy!

I wish the author would have had her heroine be stronger and have had some self worth. The story would have been significantly better if Allison would have resisted Cole's advances and stood up for herself. The M/F/M wasn't necessary for the story. In fact, if it would have been more of a "love triangle" where the heroine had to choose between her past (Cole), what she knows and may believe it to be "true love" and a future with someone who would treat her with tenderness, affection and have a mutual respect with a love that could blossom, then this would have been a much better read.

Over all, an easy read.

Note: Author provided novella in exchange for an honest review.

Rating: 2 Stars - It was okay

Guest Post: Resurrecting Harry by Constance Phillips

A Twist of Fate: Resurrecting Harry

Have you ever wished you could write your own ending to a story that maybe, didn’t quite, turn out the way you wanted it to?

That’s sort of what happened with my newest novel, Resurrecting Harry.

I’ve always been intrigued by the mystery and bigger than life persona that was Harry Houdini, and found the fact that Bess kept a candle burning for her dearly, departed husband for ten years a compelling – yet, very sad – story. I am a romance writer after all.

The idea of someone dedicating the remainder of their life upholding their mate’s legacy rang of a Shakespearean tragedy.

Some of the questions that ran through my mind were: Wouldn’t it have been better if she’d fallen in love again? But what of her star-crossed, fated love to her dear, sweet Harry? Harry could escape any confines. Or so he said. What if he had been able to escape death?

Yes. It can get pretty scary in my head.

Resurrecting Harry is very different from any of my other work, but my process is much the same. I will hear a song on the radio, see a person waiting for a bus, or hear a bit of a news clip on TV. My mind takes that tidbit and goes off on tangents. It asks questions. Sometimes it answers those questions too. Most of the time, I find myself building, not only characters from the ground up, but scenarios, too.  I create their fates.

Did that one person waiting for a bus, just get dumped? Is he about to meet his soul mate?

But Bess and Harry had their story. A beginning, middle and end already existed. I just wasn’t all that crazy about the ending.

When the book opens, Harry is nearing the end of his time in Purgatory and meets its keeper.  Harry ends up making a wager which allows him to escape death and return to earth with a new, younger face and body, a new name, and a mission to change Bess’s course.

Everything from there is a twist of the fate they were given…

Resurrecting Harry
By Constance Phillips

Synopsis:

Can the greatest escape artist ever known break the grim reaper’s chains to save the only woman he’s ever loved?

In order to save Bess from self-destruction, Harry Houdini puts his afterlife on the line by entering a wager with purgatory’s keeper. He gives Harry a younger face and body, and a new name: Erich Welch.

Bess clings to his promise to deliver a coded message from beyond the grave, determined to provide the bridge for him to cross, even if that means befriending her husband's sworn enemy.

Erich needs to help Bess over her loss and put her on the road to healing, but will any good come from resurrecting Harry?

Paul's Review:

I love it when an author grabs you by the head, pulls you into his/her story, and does not let go.  This has been my experience with Janet Breakfield’s "Bayou Legend".  I am an Italian-American man from the Northeast (specifically Connecticut); however, Janet Breakfield’s ease in enabling me to relate to her main character Emily, a young Cajun woman, was impressive: Emily and I both love our grandparents dearly, we both have something from them that we cherish, and we both endeavor to spend as much time as possible with them as we can.

Guest Post: Bewitched by Mark Jay Harris

I'd like to welcome Mark J. Harris to Enchantress of Books!

How I Do What I Do

When it comes to creative writing, I always start with a premise of some sort.  For example, I like to kick off the creative process with a “what if…” scenario. What if a Genie appeared to someone who was both deaf and blind? What would happen?  What if a vampire develops an allergy to certain blood types resulting in temporary amnesia?  What does he do when he finds himself covered in blood with a dead body on the ground?  And as much as possible, I hope to come up with a premise that has never been done before.

Candie's Review:

Awesome, awesome, awesome! I loved the world that J.L. Vallance created in Deep Into the Soul. There was a dark and edgy feel to the book that had me hooked from the beginning. With an intense prologue to start off, I was fascinated to see where the story would take me.
