Book Review: Micro by Michael Crichton and Richard Preston

Micro
by Michael Crichton and Richard Preston

Blurb:
Three men are found dead in the locked second-floor office of a Honolulu building, with no sign of struggle except for the ultrafine, razor-sharp cuts covering their bodies. The only clue left behind is a tiny bladed robot, nearly invisible to the human eye.

In the lush forests of Oahu, groundbreaking technology has ushered in a revolutionary era of biological prospecting. Trillions of microorganisms, tens of thousands of bacteria species, are being discovered; they are feeding a search for priceless drugs and applications on a scale beyond anything previously imagined.

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, seven graduate students at the forefront of their fields are recruited by a pioneering microbiology start-up. Nanigen MicroTechnologies dispatches the group to a mysterious lab in Hawaii, where they are promised access to tools that will open a whole new scientific frontier.

But once in the Oahu rain forest, the scientists are thrust into a hostile wilderness that reveals profound and surprising dangers at every turn. Armed only with their knowledge of the natural world, they find themselves prey to a technology of radical and unbridled power. To survive, they must harness the inherent forces of nature itself.

An instant classic, Micro pits nature against technology in vintage Crichton fashion. Completed by visionary science writer Richard Preston, this boundary-pushing thriller melds scientific fact with pulse-pounding fiction to create yet another masterpiece of sophisticated, cutting-edge entertainment.

Paul's Review:
This reviewer will never forget reading Richard Preston's Hot Zone.  Wow.  What an enthralling and terrifying read.  What made it even more scary is the fact that the Ebola virus was real.

Lea's Review:
"Open House" is a quick and delightfully sexy read.  It's not your ordinary paranormal.  There's a twist.  The Gods of Olympus, in this case Aphrodite and Ares, play a crucial role in influencing the decisions and actions of the humans they look out for.  It reminds me of legendary Greek Mythology and the clash and chemistry between immortal Gods and ordinary humans.

Book Review: American Ghoul by Walt Morton

American Ghoul
By Walt Morton

Blurb:
Seventeen-year-old Howard Pickman has some unusual problems: He comes from a family of ghouls with a long history of digging up corpses, and he’s just moved to a new school filled with kids that are scarier than he is. American Ghoul is the story of an exceptionally odd teenager trying to survive the most terrible time anybody has to go through -- senior year at high school

Available for purchase at

Paul's Review:
I like creepy.  I especially like creepy if it is really, truly creepy.  American Ghoul by Walt Morton is a great, really creepy, and, in some cases, hilarious read.

Morton tells the story of a high school student in New Jersey in the seventies who is a ghoul.  What, exactly, is a ghoul?  A ghoul is a supernatural creature who looks like a normal human, but who has two different colored eyes and who digs up freshly dug graves to eat dead human flesh - particularly the brain, pituitary gland, heart, adrenal gland, and the liver.  What if on top of all the normal high school worries like friends, grades, cliques (or not), sex, drugs, college looming in the future, etc. you also had to dig up graves and eat whom you found to survive?

This reviewer is a big fan of true horror stories and movies.  Comedy should not, as a rule, be included in the story or movie.  On the other hand, Walt Morton just proved me wrong.  Morton's subject matter is truly horrific (much to my delight), and there were also many instances of me laughing to tears (with my wife and niece looking at me as if I were crazy).  What a truly entertaining book.  As I have said there was horror and comic relief.  There was also a great friendship story, an underdog you rout for, tragedy, a love story, and (I am happy to say) a really great ending.  This book was dead on (no pun intended) when it comes to what the whole high school experience is like, and it reminded me of my own high school years - minus being a ghoul, of course.

If this book is the first in a series of six, then I cannot wait to read the rest!  I am very happy to give this book five stars out of five.  Creep me out completely AND make me laugh hysterically AND do it successfully will you, Walt Morton?  Creep on, Mr. Morton, creep on.  I dig it (ha, ha, ok now pun intended).

Guest Post and Giveaway: Twilight Hunter by Kait Ballenger

Welcome to Enchantress of Books Kait Ballenger!!

5 Rules to Create Strong Heroines

As someone who spent a good majority of her time and money in her undergraduate career studying Woman and Gender Studies, I consider myself to be a self-proclaimed third-wave feminist. One of the many ways I find myself enacting these beliefs is within my writing. In a recent email exchange with Vivianna, the Enchantress of Books, the trend of “I need a man” heroines was mentioned. I try my hardest to write heroines that are not only realistic, but strong, so I thought I would share five steadfast rules I have for writing the heroines of the Execution Underground with you.

Candie's Review:
Dear lord how I loved this book! Thank you Kara for recommending this to me! The focus of the story revolves around Rule Archer and his friends that work in a Tattoo Shop. He’s completely covered in tats and has a Mohawk that changes color every other day. Quintessential bad boy, Rule works hard and plays hard, never settling down with one girl. He’s known Shaw for half of his life as she used to date his brother who was killed in a tragic car accident. In his mind, Shaw is way off limits and doesn’t see her as someone that he could or would ever date. It’s not until Shaw has way too much to drink on her birthday and makes a pass at him does he realize that there is a lot more to her than he ever realized.

Spotlight Tour: The Rise of the Red Shadow by Joseph Lallo

Rise Tour Banner Every story must begin somewhere. For the warrior who would come to be known as the fearsome Red Shadow, the story began in a forgotten glade deep in the land of Tressor. It was there that a pair of trackers, eager to retrieve a lost slave, instead found an orphaned malthrope. Had it been a human, it might have been treated with compassion, but in the eyes of human society a malthrope was a monster, a mix of fox and man believed to be a murderer and thief by its very nature. The beast was to be sold for a handful of silver, but fate intervened in the form of an old blind slave named Ben. Under the learned hand of the one human who believed in his potential, the young malthrope would instead be given the wisdom to take his first steps on the long journey to his destiny. The Rise of the Red Shadow chronicles the early life of one of the most mysterious figures of the Book of Deacon trilogy, the creature called Lain. It tells of his years working and learning on a Tresson plantation until a dark day of vengeance and bloodshed finally set him free. From there you will follow as he finds his place in the world, learning what it is to be a malthrope, and turning to the purpose that will guide him for the rest of his days. It is a story of love, hate, and lessons hard-learned, revealing the painful choices one must make to become the hero the world needs.

Candie's Review:
AAAH, the second installment of the Guild Series did not disappoint! I loved it as much and maybe even a little more than Deep into the Soul

Revelations of the Soul picked up right where Deep Into the Soul left off. I couldn't wait to dig into this book because at the end of Deep into the Soul, Aedan, Lord of the Daemonium, kidnaps Vivienne. This is the man/being that has been tormenting her dreams for years in which she sees him killing people through his eyes. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what he would do to/with her. Despite keeping her captive, he didn't want to hurt her, but wanted her for some greater devious purpose. Once this purpose was revealed to her, she desperately wanted Calum to come to her rescue. She needed to be back with the Guild to tell them what was coming.
