Feature and Follow, #3

"Feature and Follow Friday" is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read where they each feature a fellow blogger, and ask a question, to be answered by anyone who wants to participate. We then hop around to other blogs, checking out their answers. It is a great way to get to know other bloggers. See additional info below

This week's question is:
What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

Well, if you've read my reviews, you may already know at least one of these: Weak Heroines. It's sooo over done. The gorgeous girl who doesn't understand why the hot guy likes her (I mean, when every character in the book is telling you that you're gorgeous and you're described as a Greek goddess, seriously?). Then there's the weak, "I need a man in my life, but poor me, blah blah blah."  hehehe I think you guys get what I'm saying.

Another is or rather was books in first person. I know, I know, its become extremely popular and will continue to be a trend in many genres. However, not every author can pull this off correctly. Especially with regards to POV. When done write, it can be great. When its not, well it can be, an epic failure. Thankfully, I've been fortunate enough to have read a few books written in first person that have been great, so I am no longer "turned off" by that.

Oh, the "Love at first sight" thing. I think it works within the PNR/UF genre more than in the other genre. I get having a connection and having sparks fly. But there's gotta be something more that binds the couple together. Lust at first site, definitely!! Caring for someone, yes of course. However, the "I love you so much, lets get married and live happily ever after, even though we only met a week ago......", eh. Can it happen and have it be a great love story, sure!! But how realistic is it really? I know, it's a book, a story. Something to distract you and take you away from reality for a little bit. My thing isn't so much the concept or idea of Love at First sight, but rather at how again, its been over done. Same goes for the "Love Triangle" Lets try something different, okay?

What are yours? Can't wait to hear them!!

How does this work? First you leave your name here on this post, (using the linky tools — keep scrolling!) then you create a post on your own blog that links back to this post (easiest way is to just grab the code under the #FF picture and put it in your post) and then you visit as many blogs as you can and tell them “hi” in their comments (on the post that has the #FF image). You follow them, they follow you. Win. Win. Just make sure to follow back if someone follows you!

What sets this Hop apart from others, is our Feature. Each week we will showcase a Featured Blogger, from all different genres and areas. Who is our Feature today? Find out below. Just remember it is required, if you participate, to follow our Features and you must follow the hosts (Parajunkee & Alison Can Read) as a courtesy. How do you follow someone? Well, if you have a preference, state it in your #FF post. A lot of blogs are transitioning to WordPress in which they do not have the luxury of GFC, so an RSS subscription is appreciated or if you choose an email subscription. If you don’t have GFC please state in your post how you would like to be followed.

All features are chosen randomly to be the feature. They are not chosen by content or name.

  3. Weak heroines are a major turn off. I really hate though when the heroine can't accept what is going on in the book and makes stupid decisions because she thinks that she has to do everything herself. I'm all for feminism but there are times when it's nice when the male steps in to! urg :)

  4. hi!
Weak heroines, that's a good one. I like my heroines kick-ass yet also show a vulnerable side once in a while. But who def doesn't need a man to make her life complete.

  5. Interesting question.

Aside from weak main characters, it would be cardboard villains. I like having a reason to root for the heroes but I also like seeing the good and bad side of the villains--their motivations other than he/she is bad. Ups the ante a bit.
